The chipmaker joins other investors supporting next-generation nuclear reactors intended to power the future of AI and clean energy, alongside Bill Gates and HD Hyundai.

Nvidia’s investment arm, NVentures, is among the investors as Bill Gates-backed nuclear technology firm TerraPower raises $650 million to support the development of its advanced Natrium nuclear reactors. The capital will fund the continued construction of the company’s first commercial Natrium plant in the United States — a process that has progressed without final regulatory approval — as well as expansion overseas.

The funding round was announced June 18 and includes participation from new and returning investors, TerraPower said. Alongside NVentures, it included investment from Gates himself and HD Hyundai, a leading shipbuilder. The investment will accelerate the advancement of TerraPower’s Natrium reactor technology — a sodium-cooled fast reactor paired with a gigawatt-scale energy storage system designed for improved safety, cost efficiency, and streamlined construction.

The involvement of Nvidia is a clear sign of increasing confidence in advanced nuclear technology as a strategic solution for the world’s need for large-scale, reliable, clean electricity generation. We are proud to welcome Nvidia to our visionary group of investors. TerraPower CEO Chris Levesque

Natrium reactor project in Wyoming is expected to be the first of its kind in the United States. Final regulatory approval is expected in 2026. The plant is projected to produce 345 MW of power, with additional units planned for both domestic and international deployment.

Other technology companies, including Google and Oracle, have also shown interest in nuclear-powered infrastructure to meet increasing energy needs.
