Nikon has unveiled the 24.5MP 6K60p ZR full-frame mirrorless cinema camera with RED technologies for professional filmmakers.
RED was founded by James Jannard, who also founded Oakley. The company's cameras have been used in Hollywood due to their high resolution, image quality, and compact size at a relatively affordable price. In 2024, Nikon acquired RED.
The ZR incorporates RED color science and related technologies for professional filmmaking. It can also be used for photography and it incorporates many features found in other Z cameras, including AI autofocus and Z-mount lens compatibility.
The full-frame sensor has an ISO range of 100 to 64,000, with a dual base ISO of 800 and 6,400 in video mode, and is stabilized up to 7.5 stops, according to Nikon. Filmmakers can set the shutter angle from 5.6° to 360°, while photographers can set the electronic shutter speed from 900 to 1/16,000 sec.
The camera can record videos up to 6K60p with 15+ stops of dynamic range in 12-bit Redcode RAW (R3D NE) codec, enabling the use of identical color space and log curve to those used by RED cameras for easy post-production integration of footage from multiple cameras. Nokia OZO Audio allows filmmakers to capture spatial audio recordings for added realism.
Photos and videos can be previewed on the 4-inch vari-angle LCD display with 1000-nits of brightness and DCI-P3 color space coverage. The monitor can be set to display a video histogram, waveform, and zebra pattern to aid filmmakers in monitoring the image quality.
The magnesium alloy body is dust- and drip-resistant. The ZR measures 5.2 x 3.2 x 1.9 in. (133 x 80.5 x 48.7 mm) and weighs 1.19 lbs. (0.54 kg). The camera has a rated continuous record time of 125 minutes when powered by its internal battery, or until its CFexpress Type-B or microSD (UHS-1) cards are full when powered by an external USB-C power source.
The Nikon ZR has an MSRP of $2,199.95 and will be available in late October 2025. Readers can look for it in the Nikon store on Amazon.
