The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced plans to bring content from their free NASA+ service onto Netflix. The space exploration agency hopes to leverage the streaming service and show its content to a global audience.
The NASA+ service will remain free with no ads on the official NASA app and website. There will be no additional cost to Netflix subscribers.
Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, said the partnership allows " the agency to increase engagement with and inspire a global audience in a modern media landscape."
In May, NASA announced a similar deal with Amazon's Prime Video, debuting a Free Ad-Supported Television (FAST) channel on the platform to give viewers an easy way to access the agency's efforts in spaceflight, science, and technology.
Netflix has also been pushing for diversification into live content on the platform. They have been slowly expanding their live sports catalog, signing deals with WWE, and hosting special live events such as a celebrity golf tournament featuring athletes from the documentary series Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing.
Netflix also announced a deal with French media company TF1, which allows them to stream popular scripted dramas and unscripted shows such as The Voice, including other major live sporting events, to French members.
With the NASA partnership, Netflix will now have access to live-stream rocket launches, exclusive interviews with prominent staff, live mission coverage, and live views of Earth from the International Space Station (ISS).
NASA stressed that viewers can still watch all of this completely ad-free on their official website and app.
