The manufacturer Ugreen has started selling its new Nexode 500W GaN charger in Europe. It should launch in other regions soon. Specifically, it's now available on Amazon Germany for €250, but a coupon provides a 20% launch discount until June 8. Alternatively, it's available directly at the company's UK online store for £175 with code "DL55551". Even after these discounts, this is arguably a quite expensive charger, which also offers a lot of performance in return.
The aforementioned 500 watts are not available on a single port, but rather represent the maximum cumulative charging power. A single device can be charged at up to 240 watts via USB PD 3.1. In order to utilize this amount of power, the device itself also has to support it, which is not the case with the vast majority of smartphones and tablets. For example, Ugreen states that an Apple MacBook Pro 16 can be charged to 60% in just 30 minutes, but the laptop only uses up to 140 watts.
That said, the 500W Nexode charger sports a total of six USB ports. Five connections are of the modern Type-C variety, one has the traditional USB-A format. Only the first USB-C port supplies up to 240 watts, the other ports are limited to 100 watts, while the Type-A port maxes out at 20 watts. When all six ports are being used, the charger offers 1x 240 watts, 4x 60 watts and 1x 20 watts. Moreover, this new charging brick weighs around 4 lbs and measures 5.75 x 2.36 x 4.53 inches, which means it’s not exactly portable or compact. Therefore, the Nexode 500W is primarily designed for stationary use on a desk. In case the charger tips over, Ugreen has implemented a clever safety system that automatically reduces the charging power.
