Small. Light. Wind. The manufacturer MSI beefs up once again and expands its Wind range by the U160 with a 10 inch WSVGA display, Intel Atom N450, one GB DDR 2 RAM and 160 GB hard disk. An Intel GMA 3150 chip, already integrated into the Atom N450 CPU, is used for the graphic solution.

Outstanding battery performance and an excellent keyboard, make the Wind U160 one of the better netbooks around.

If there is one particular failing that the MSI Wind U160 has as a netbook, it is that it only comes with 1GB RAM, meaning you'll be wanting to upgrade almost as soon as you get it home (about £30). Otherwise there is little on offer to differentiate the MSI Wind U160 from other netbook rivals. But at the same time the Wind U160 doesn't do anything wrong. There are cheaper netbooks that offer almost identical performance if budget is a concern, but in a category where everything is much of a muchness, the long battery life and interesting design might appeal.

Visually, the new design of MSI's Wind netbook is a welcome update, but ergonomically and practically it's not without downsides. Considering there was already little on offer to differentiate the U160 from the competition and it's quite expensive to boot, we feel there are better alternatives.

As a netbook, MSI's Wind U160 has almost all of the right ingredients. The system's small, thin, ultra-light, very easy on the eye and comfortable in use. Performance is exactly what you'd expect from an Atom-powered netbook; it's perfectly adequate for basic tasks such as word processing and light web browsing, and battery life - albeit short of MSI's own claims - is excellent.

The MSI Wind U160 is one of the best netbook options available. It has the Intel Atom N450 processor, GMA 3150 integrated graphics and 1 GB DDR2 RAM. It also has a nice battery life and comes with the standard array of expansion ports and connectivity options. MSI Wind U160 is an option to consider if you want a netbook with a good hardware configuration and nice battery life. It is one of the best options available.

The MSI Wind U160 is bog-standard netbook fare on the inside, but it scores some extra points for its natty design. More importantly, this netbook is easy to use, although we have a few gripes with the display. At £330, it's also quite reasonably priced. Before you splash out, however, check out the similarly specified and priced Dell Mini 1012, which sports a higher-resolution screen.

MSI Wind U160: Gold is In
Source: Inside HW English Archive.org version
The single-core N450 has hyperthreading, therefore posing as being a dual-core model, which should provide an advantage in multi-core applications with the additional logical core. The integrated graphics is sufficient to display image only, while gaming and HD playback are way out of its league. If you’re planning to connect and external monitor, pay attention to the fact that the VGA is limited to a resolution of 1400x1050. Although it contains the least demanding Windows version, Windows 7 Starter, 1 GB DDR2 which this small guy contains will often be too little for comfortable use. A 250 GB HDD showcased outstanding performance, while the battery failed to live up to “15H+” sticker on the packaging. The 6-cell battery barely hit five hours in standard operating mode, while doubling that result under minimum load. Another problem might be the fact that the battery requires four hours to charge with the netbook off, which is more than many can afford.

With a very similar spec to a lot of netbooks floating out of the great netbook yards of Eastern China, this machine is a bit faster, for a bit longer, than many. With the exception of its bulky battery tube, it’s a well-designed traveller with a good software bundle.

The MSI Wind U160 is the best 10-inch MSI Wind netbook till date. It has good looks, decent features, nice keyboard and touchpad, and very good battery life. We recommend the Wind U160 over the Asus Eee PC 1008P because of its lower price point and its extra RAM and hard drive space - unless you don't mind spending extra on the Eee PC 1008P's unique faux-reptilian skin exterior. The MSI Wind U160 is the best looking Wind netbook till date. It offers good performance and a nice feature set, and comes with extra RAM and hard drive space compared to most other netbooks. It also offers over 7 hours of battery life.

Rs 23,999 is the quoted price, and at the outset we can say that it’s a bit expensive, especially considering the fact that there are cheaper options available. But there are few very well demarcated turfs of advantage here: one being a very strong battery life. Our Battery eater Pro Classic rating was about 6 hours, which is a great reading. On normal usage like browsing , 'MS officing' etc we received a battery life of 9 hours 45 minutes, a healthy rating for sure.

Netbooks traditionally fall into the realm of cheap looking and cheap feeling, and are effectively a low-price equivalent of a laptop, but the MSI Wind U160 looks a lot sleeker and more professional than the older MSI netbooks. There is a premium for this new look, as the U160 is priced at £330, which is a good £50 more than MSI's similar U135 model that only lacks the swish design.

The MSI Wind U160 is more than just an affordable tech-fashion accessory. With Pine Trail performance and a stunning design, it also has a few surprises inside its shell. Priced at $429.99 (or about $380 street), this netbook comes equipped with a six-cell battery and a roomy 250GB hard drive. This gorgeous netbook features a slim build and long battery life, though its price tops the list of Pine Trail netbooks.

The MSI Wind U160 ($379) isn’t perfect—its battery juts out of the back and its keys are smallish—but on the whole it’s a strong choice in the 10-inch category. This machine offers especially long battery life, good performance, and one of the lightest designs you’ll find. However, we prefer the $299 ASUS Eee PC 1001P, which offers a more comfortable keyboard, comparable battery life, identical specs, and a sleek—but heavier—design for less money.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Integrated (shared memory) graphics card in the intel Atom N4xx CPUs. Minimally faster than an old GMA 950 and therefore not suited for 3D games or HD videos (only MPEG2 acceleration).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

N450:

Intel Atom CPU for Netbooks with integrated memory controller and GMA 3150 GPU. The performance of the system should be only minimally faster than the previous Atom N280 / GMA 950 combination.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

10.00":

This display format is used for small tablets and a few very big smartphones (so big that they are rather tablets). This is for customers who want a small portable tablet with a display which is at least much bigger than usual smartphone displays.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

76.72%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
