The MSI GX60 is a budget gaming notebook that almost gets the formula right. As tested, the GX60 is meant to be sold for $1,420, but we couldn't find it anywhere as of writing. Instead an identical system without the SSD is sold on Amazon and Newegg for $1,200. Considering the SSD was one of weak points of this system, for $100 you could easily justify plugging in a faster, more reliable SSD than the one MSI shipped to us. Despite the bulky aesthetics we applaud how rounded the MSI system is, especially for the price, you get a pretty good GPU, display quality, built-in audio and battery life. Which ultimately makes it hard not to wonder what sort of potential the GX60 could have had with the right processor.

That said, it all makes for a very sturdy and robust feeling system. Likewise, the keyboard feels great, too. Engineered by keyboard specialist Steelseries, it's very stable with little to no deflection of the keyboard bed. But it's the AMD A10 CPU that's the real sticking point. It's just about tolerable for most current games. But there's absolutely no performance in hand for future games. And it makes the AMD Radeon HD 7970M dedicated graphics chip seem a little futile and the GX60 ultimately a bit off-target.

The MSI GX60 is an affordable Windows 8 gaming notebook that provides excellent graphics performance, surprisingly long battery life and a 1080p HD display. The design could be a little better as it's a little chunky and the keyboard isn't backlit. For the money, the MSI GX60 is a pretty good value. MSI chose to use an AMD CPU that is still able to compete with Intel Core powered notebooks without that added cost. We really like the inclusion of a Blu-ray player and dual hard drives on such an affordable laptop.

So the MSI GX60 is not only an impressive laptop on paper, but also in practice. While some may consider the AMD A10 Trinity APU to be a bit of a bottleneck, the quad-core processor is more than capable of handling daily tasks and gaming in general. Games like Battlefield 3 and Guild Wars 2 which are heavily dependent on the CPU do show the limitations of the Trinity APU, however.

Budget minded gamers should no doubt give the GX60 a serious look. Its impressive Batman: Arkham City scores alone should tell you that this AMD workhorse is no slouch. The 1080p matte screen makes movies and games look like candy for your retinas, while its keyboard and cool palmrest will be welcome homes for your hands while you taunt your LAN-mates after fragging them.

The MSI GX60 Laptop is a well priced machine targeting a wide enthusiast audience who don’t wish to pay £1,500-£2,000+ for a new high powered gaming laptop. The recommended retail price of £999.99 inc vat is very competitive. The fact that Overclockers are selling it this week for £899.99 inc vat makes for a very tempting proposition. The MSI GX60 has many strong points worthy of mention. The included Steelseries keyboard is fantastic, offering tactile feedback, well spaced out keys and a full numpad. The only problem is the lack of double height return key, which always causes a problem for me, long term. It isn’t backlit either which is slightly disappointing.

A bold hardware mix. How much power does the Radeon HD 7970M still have when the high-end graphics is combined with a weak processor? MSI installs AMD's low-cost A10-4600M quad-core in its GX60 to achieve the lowest price possible. Our benchmarks reveal the sobering results.

The MSI GX60 1AC does have some things going for it, like the sound quality and battery life... But the processor is entirely inadequate to support the graphics card, stopping it from providing any quality gaming, and the picture quality is atrocious.

If you want a system around $1,300, you can ask for one that offers good performance on multimedia creation or 3D gaming prowess, but not both. When you're faced with a choice of overall performance vs. gaming performance on a budget, the MSI GX60 1AC-021US is a great entry-level system for the gamer on a budget.

Pricewise, the GX60 would replace the Maingear Pulse 11, but that system is technically an ultraportable gaming desktop EC. However, the GX60 is a better gaming rig than the Pulse 11, especially considering the GX60's frame rates at 1,920 by 1,080 and looking at the comparative 3DMark 11 scores. The MSI GX60 is the gaming laptop we'd recommend at the sub-$1,500 price point. That earns it our Editors' Choice award for entry-level gaming laptops. Since it can play high-end 3D games at its 1,920 by 1,080 native resolution, it's the affordable rig we'd buy to hone our 3D gaming skills.

The MSI GX60 1AC is a mid-sized, affordable gaming laptop that has a 1080p display, a Blu-ray optical drive, above average battery life and solid performance. It does lack a backlit keyboard and the touch pad is rather small for our liking.

Sure, we'd like to see an option for a solid-state drive. And despite its responsiveness, we never got used to the system's cramped, recessed touch pad. But most gamers will want to use a mouse when gaming, and if you really want an SSD, the system's chassis has space inside for a second hard drive. So you could drop an SSD in yourself without losing the 750GB hard drive.

On paper, the AMD-powered MSI GX60 had to seem like a good idea, and I'm not even convinced it actually isn't one. Using a less expensive CPU to force the price tag down and going whole hog on the GPU isn't that uncommon among custom built desktop PCs, so as long as the gaming performance is there in a notebook, it's certainly worth a shot.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

AMD Radeon R9 M290X: High-end GPU from AMD based on the 28nm Neptune GPU (GCN architecture). Technically identical to the HD 8970M.
