In the times of thinner bezels around bigger screens, even the business sector can not stand still. That is why Lenovo increases the size of its smallest ThinkPad from 12.5 to 13.3-inch. Is the new Lenovo ThinkPad X390 a worthy successor of the classical ThinkPad X200 series?

The Lenovo ThinkPad X390 is a great option for users who want something a bit more compact than the X1 Yoga or the T400 Series ThinkPads, but not as expensive as the X1 Carbon.

At the beginning of this review, we did express our minor annoyance of the similarities between many different ThinkPad devices. While we are still on the same page, it proved to be not bad at all. In fact, we had a really hard time finding something to complain about this laptop. There are some people on the Internet that say their ThinkPad X390 has an awful coil whine sound coming from the machine. However, we didn’t hear anything weird from our unit, so we won’t be able to confirm the problem.

The ThinkPad X390 is another typically reliable entry in Lenovo’s venerable ThinkPad family, balancing performance and features to create an ideal all-rounder. Battery life is a slight weak point compared to some rivals, but otherwise, this is an excellent device.

Overall, the Lenovo X390 is a good option for those looking for something to replace their old Windows 7 business laptop. ThinkPad durability means the thing can take a beating while still being relatively lightweight and compact. Performance from the eighth-generation Intel chippery is excellent and a wide range of ports (even a headphone/mic jack) cuts down on the dongles needed to be lugged on the road.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X390 is a frustrating laptop to review because it could—and perhaps should—be so much more than it is. It’s an attractive package with impressive performance and lots of helpful business features. For the price, however, we expected better experiences with the display, keyboard, and touchpad.

The ThinkPad X390 is ideal for road warriors who need a laptop that can handle the stresses of travel without weighing the user down or taking up too much bag space. We like the classic design combined with a relatively high number of ports (for an ultra-portable, at least), excellent keyboard and display, and solid performance. Buyers who need maximum battery life would be best advised to check out one of the ThinkPad T Series models with second swappable batteries.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.

Intel Core i5:
i5-8265U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.9 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
