After we tested the ThinkPad T15g with a GeForce GPU, we now take a look at the Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 1 model. The entry-level version of the workstation fares well in terms of the performance, but it shows a surprising weakness in the input devices.

The ThinkPad P15 is bulky and expensive (though not as expensive as our Dell Precision 7550 review unit), but it's a mighty juggernaut among professional laptops and our new favorite mobile workstation. It shrugs off jobs that would strangle an ordinary notebook, and its display and keyboard make it a pleasure to use. Accept no substitutes.

Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen. 1, a very powerful 15.6” mobile workstation laptop that’s the successor to the ThinkPad P53. The laptop has a wide array of ports and is quite upgradable—including 4 RAM slots. It runs your choice of Windows 10 or Ubuntu Linux on Intel 10th gen H series 45 watt Core i5, i7 and i9 CPUs (Intel Xeon also available). NVIDIA Quadro graphics from the T1000 up to our Quadro RTX 5000 Max-Q 16GB are available. The ThinkPad P15 is available with matte full HD and wide gamut 4K IPS displays as well as a 4K OLED option. The computer has Thunderbolt 3, optional 4G LTE, HDMI, an SD card slot and more in terms of connectivity.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P15 is a remarkable laptop in many regards. Its virtually unmatched performance can handle any conceivable task you could throw at it. But it has a few clear misses that make it a less compelling option for some users.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA Quadro T1000 (Laptop): Mid range dedicated graphics card for professional laptops based on the consumer GTX 1650 but with less shaders. Therefore it uses the Turing architecture without raytracing and Tensor cores.
NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 Max-Q: Professional high-end laptop graphics card based on the TU104 chip with 3,072 shaders and 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM. Compared to the normal mobile variant, the Max-Q variants are clocked lower and work in a more efficient state. Currently, we know of three variants with different clock speeds and power consumptions (80, 85 and 90 W).

The CPU cores run at 2.6 GHz (base clock speed) Boosting up to 5.0 GHz and the likely all-core Boost frequency is 4.3 GHz. Hyper-Threading is enabled, allowing two threads to run simultaneously on each core.
i9-10885H: On Coffee Lake architecture based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates eight processor cores clocked at 2.4 - 5.3 GHz that support HyperThreading. Manufactured in an improved 14nm process (14nm++). The Core i9-10855H supports the management features vPro, TXT and SIPP.
