The Unitree G1, a new humanoid robot that costs about as much as an inexpensive small car, will enter mass production soon. With a LiDAR scanner, a depth camera, an impressive range of motion and adaptive software, the robot is designed to be versatile.

The Unitree G1 is being marketed as an improved, production-ready version of the Unitree H1 and will be available in the future for $16,000. The launch video below shows some of the capabilities of the humanoid robot, which is slightly smaller than the average adult at 1.32 meters (4.3 feet) tall and weighing 35 kilograms (77 pounds).

The robot has a 360-degree LiDAR scanner and an Intel RealSense D435 depth camera for precise measurement of distances to objects in the robot's proximity. Speakers and microphones allow for verbal interaction. The robot's joints reportedly not only enable flexibility, but also a reasonable speed of 7.2 km/h and the ability to lift around 2 kilograms per arm. The manufacturer advertises a battery life of two hours, whereby the 9,000 mAh battery can be replaced by the user.

An unspecified eight-core processor is at work inside, and wireless connections can be established via Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. With three individually controllable fingers, the robot is supposedly able to cook simple dishes. However, the software will not be capable of such features from launch; instead, a so-called Robot Unified Large Model (UnifoLM) will enable it to imitate human behavior. Hence, the robot will be primarily aimed at researchers and developers at launch.

Price and availability

Although the Unitree G1 is said to be ready for mass production, the manufacturer has not yet confirmed when the robot will actually go into series production and be delivered to customers. In any case, the robot will be offered for $16,000. More information on the technology can be found on the manufacturer's website.
