HTC to acquire S3 Graphics from VIA

Teaser
S3 Graphics will reportedly be sold to HTC in a $300 million deal

S3 Graphics is not among the top GPU makers but apparently HTC wants the technology behind the company’s success in recent years and use it for its upcoming tablets and other electronic devices.

VIA Technologies purchased S3 back in 2000 and its central processing units have been carrying S3 video controllers ever since.

Reportedly, S3 Graphics specializes in manufacturing embedded products for desktop and notebook computers. The $300 million deal has been approved by all participating parties (part of the money will supposedly go to WTI, which is a private investment company) and should be completed by the end of the year.

After the acquisition, HTC will reportedly provide customers with products capable of 3D and HD playback using its own chips.
