With its launch fast approaching, the HTC Ocean reportedly has been re-branded as the HTC U 11. The new name should make it easier for customers to identify the handset as the Taiwanese company's new flagship.

What's in a name? When it comes to HTC smartphones, usually nothing but confusion. The company seems intent on rectifying that, however, and it plans to start with its upcoming flagship device. Currently known by its codename, HTC Ocean, it will be rebranded as the HTC U 11, a fusion of past and present naming schemes.

The source for this new rumor is none other than Evan Blass, leaker extraordinaire. He has spoken exclusively to Venture Beat about the name change and its meaning. According to Blass, the "U" moniker places the phone in the same family as HTC's other 2017 releases, the U Ultra and U Play, while the "11" designation marks it as the direct successor to the company's previous flagship, the HTC 10.

Venture Beat also reports that there will be five vibrant colors available for the upcoming handset: white, black, silver, red, and blue. Every color will not be available in every region, however.

As reported earlier this week, the HTC U 11 will launch at event scheduled for May 16.
