The EliteBook 8440p is beautifully made, performed brilliantly in our benchmark tests and even had a decent four hour, 43 minute battery life under light usage. However, despite its many strengths, at this price we were disappointed to find only 2GB of memory and a meagre 250GB hard disk. The lengthy three-year return to base warranty goes a long way to making up for this, though, and touchstick users, who aren't widely catered for beyond Lenovo's ThinkPad range, will find the 8440p to be one of their better options. Most of the features the laptop is missing – more memory and a larger hard disk, for instance – are relatively cheap and easy to upgrade, but this only makes their absence more surprising. If you're paying £950 for a laptop, we don't think you should have to upgrade just to get a large amount of hard disk space. Nonetheless, if you can put up with these omissions, the EliteBook 8440p is a good general-purpose laptop.

With an attractive and robust design, the EliteBook 8440p certainly has its plus points, but the decision to go with 32-bit Windows and the poor battery life hamper overall appeal. And with a similarly specified, but slightly smaller-screened 13in MacBook priced around the same mark, many business users may prefer Apple's alternative.

In sheer performance terms, the HP EliteBook 8440p is a true desktop replacement, packed into a relatively totable 14in-screen package. It's very pricey, but obviously built to last. With the help of its top-spec Core i7 dual-core processor, it should also keep up with the competition for a couple of years too.

We're suckers for nice-looking business notebook, which is the kind of sad confession you'd expect from people who spend their life playing with tech (we only do it for the pay cheque, honest). But who could resist the 14in HP EliteBook 8440p (WL653PA)? HP's EliteBook 8440p is a sturdily built business laptop with enough power to make office productivity tasks a breeze. It's got a functional and attractive design that's sure to turn heads.

The HP EliteBook 8440p is a rugged machine, both inside and out. The top and palmrests are covered in brushed metal, with durable metal hinges, and it’s attached directly to the magnesium subframe. It has a drain in the keyboard tray for liquids, it can withstand an adult’s direct weight on the lid, and frame flex is nonexistent. The addition of the TPM chip and biometric sensor create a comprehensive security package that protects your laptop/data/livelihood from destruction. As a machine, the EliteBook laptop provides connectivity, security, speed, and durability at 4.59 lbs (2.08 kg) and for a reasonable $999. The only significant design detractions are the small touchpad and the average battery life. But those quibbles are minor, and the overall impression is that this laptop is ready for pretty much anything. Heck, this laptop may outlive you if you give it the chance. Comments

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

75.75%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
