HP Elite x3 not dead yet, sales to continue through to 2019

Despite some recent rumors to the contrary, HP hasn’t given up on its Windows 10 Mobile-based Elite x3 smartphone. Responding to suggestions that it may drop the device from its lineup, the company issued a statement to Neowin indicating that it will be pursuing its Elite x3 strategy through to 2019. Whether that includes giving the device a hardware refresh wasn’t, however, addressed in the statement that can be read here:

We remain committed to our mobility strategy and vision and will sell the Elite x3 through 2019 while continuing to enhance our portfolio delivering multi-OS devices, accessories and workflow transformation solutions. Mobility is an exciting and rapidly evolving area, and HP will continue to explore ways to address our customers’ mobile computing needs.

The HP Elite x3 is currently one of the only flagship devices still touting the benefits of Windows 10 Mobile. Although its Snapdragon 820 chipset is starting to show its age, the rest of its hardware is still quite respectable. This includes a 5.96-inch WQHD AMOLED display, finger print sensor, B&O audio, 16 MP rear camera and an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. It also supports Windows Continuum, which allows users to use a dock accessory to connect it to PC monitor, keyboard and mouse to run Office apps as you would on a regular PC. A separate “dumb” laptop dock is also available as an accessory acting as laptop-like terminal when paired with the x3 over Bluetooth.

It is priced at US$689 on HP’s US website, which for a device released in August last year is still relatively expensive. There are deals to be had if you go hunting, but perhaps it highlights the benefits of being a rare beast in a world dominated by Android and iOS.
