Elon Musk tips new Tesla colors at long last, a complex 13-layer red and 8-layer 'liquid' silver
During all the festivities surrounding the opening of the first Tesla plant on European soil, the Gigafactory Berlin, Elon Musk also tipped that the "world's most advanced paint shop" in the Berlin-Brandenburg facility will be coming up with two new colors for Tesla's EVs. Starting with the Model Y SUVs produced there, the new hues will include a complex 13-layer red color as well as a "liquid" 8-layer silver option. Those will be coming as official Tesla colors in the next few months, and Elon Musk elaborated on their choice further:
We have to be careful with the total number of colors, but we are going to make some special colors here, and it’s about more than the color itself, but the layers of paint in order to get the dimensionality. We are going to make a very special red, which probably a lot of a people have seen. It’s like 13 layers of paint. And we will also have a silver with maybe eight layers. It’s also going to be special – kind of a liquid silver.
Last year, new color options leaked via the Tesla app and one of them was called Deep Crimson Multicoat, indicating that this might be precisely the hue that Elon Musk is talking about in his praise of the Giga Berlin paint shop. Moreover, his own Model S was snapped outside the SpaceX HQ in a prototype dark red hue just when Tesla's CEO said that the Deep Crimson is his favorite color of the new multilayer ones that will be coming from the Gigafactory Berlin when operational. The other new colors that tellingly appeared in the Tesla app were Abyss Blue Multicoat and Mercury Silver Metallic, with the latter likely being the 8-layer "liquid silver" that Model Ys will be coming painted in from the Giga Berlin shop next.
New deep crimson from Giga Berlin is my favorite
