CleanSpark will submerge 5,940 Bitcoin mining rigs in liquid coolant to improve performance and energy efficiency
Liquid immersion cooling is seeing increased adoption among Bitcoin mining companies. This type of cooling solution is said to greatly improve the performance and the energy efficiency of the mining machines. Moreover, as opposed to the current air-cooled standards, liquid immersion also decreases maintenance costs, as the submerged mining equipment does not further come in contact with dust and pollen particles. Among the first Bitcoin mining companies to implement this cooling technique on a large scale is CleanSpark, which recently announced that almost 6,000 of its mining machines will be immersed in liquid next year.
CleanSpark plans to implement the immersion cooling infrastructure at its mining facility in Norcross, Georgia. A total of 5,940 Antminer S19j machines consuming 20 MW is to be immersed in liquid coolant throughout 2022. 8 MW worth of liquid cooled mining equipment is expected to go online by February 2022. The liquid coolant is 100% biodegradable and can help reduce the impact on the environment, as it is made of a synthetic hydrocarbon compound that does not exhibit electrical conductivity. The mining equipment is expected to be 20% more energy efficient and the liquid coolant may boost hashrate power to around 600 PH/s. Ultimately, Cleanspark is looking to add a total of 180 liquid-filled tanks, each of which will hold 33 miners.
Corroborated with the use of green energy sources, the immersion cooling technology should alleviate the climate change concerns that have been stirring controversies over the integrity of Bitcoin mining in the past few years.
