Google Drive, Mega, The Internet Archive - these are some of the most popular websites that let one store/share files for free. The issue with them is, they do not support hotlinking meaning they don't allow one to access content via direct, static links. Catbox.moe and Pomf.lain.la are thankfully free of that annoying issue.

Most free file hosting websites that still work in 2025 appear to have a common set of downsides, such as:

  • No hotlinking support.
  • Sign-up required to upload files.
  • File sizes are limited.
  • Download speed restrictions apply unless one coughs up cash for a premium account.
  • Files get deleted after a comparatively short period of time, such as 1 month.

This is where Pomf and Catbox come in. With Pomf.lain.la, one gets to upload files up to 1 GB in size anonymously that get stored indefinitely unless found to be illegal. The best part is, they can be accessed via a direct, static link.

Catbox.moe is not much different except that the files uploaded must be 200 MB in size or smaller.

While of limited use in this day and age, having a file link that just works - no need to open a separate page, or waste a quarter of a minute dealing with a CAPTCHA - totally can be useful. Free Discord accounts aren't allowed to send files larger than ~10 MB in DMs; quickly uploading the file to Catbox or Pomf will help one get around that limitation.

Both websites rely on donations to cover the operating costs.
