The CATL Shenxing battery has won the TECHNOBEST 2024 award from AUTOBEST. The organisation, founded in 2001, aims to provide consumers with a ranking of cars and a "best buy car" pick, looking at a wide range of features like safety, infotainment systems and technical data.
The AUTOBEST panel comprises members from 31 European nations, including the UK, Sweden, Belgium, France and Germany. The TECHNOBEST award for technological developments in the automotive industry has not been given to a car battery before; it has previously been won by the Renault E-Tech hybrid drive system and the company Mazda, among others. Founder of AUTOBEST, Dan Vardie, described CATL's new battery technology as a "revolution", with benefits including faster charging and improved safety.
The CATL Shenxing was unveiled in August as a 4C superfast charging lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with over 700 km (~435 miles) range when fully charged. Plus, a 20% to 80% recharge takes around ten minutes and provides about 400 km (~250 miles) range. The first EVs to use the Shenxing battery will go on sale early in 2024; the vehicles will come from companies like NETA, Chery, BAIC BJEV, Jidu and Voyah. Rumors suggest that the CATL Shenxing could also be used in Tesla and BMW electric vehicles, though this has yet to be confirmed.
