With Against the Storm, developer Eremite Games and publisher Hooded Horse released a bold title in late 2023. The game blends classic city-building with roguelike mechanics, set within a cohesive fantasy world reminiscent of Warcraft. The result has earned strong praise from both players and critics.
Against the Storm is set in a dark fantasy world where, true to its name, a relentless storm regularly wipes out everything except a fortified capital. As the viceroy, players venture into the wilderness to establish new settlements, always racing against time before the next storm strikes. While each expedition is temporary, permanent upgrades, new buildings and meta-resources are carried back to the central city, forming the foundation for future runs in increasingly challenging regions. Fans of fairy tale-inspired dark fantasy settings are likely to find the game appealing. Five playable races are available: humans, beavers, lizards, harpies and foxes.
In its review, German gaming magazine PC Games described Against the Storm as a “surprise hit of 2023,” praising its effective fusion of city-building and roguelike elements. The game’s procedural generation was highlighted as a major driver of replay value, while its cohesive presentation and visuals inspired by Warcraft also earned positive remarks. Criticism was limited to an overloaded tutorial and settlements that feel less lively than those in genre mainstays such as Anno or The Settlers. Despite these minor shortcomings, the review awarded the game a solid score of 8 out of 10. Player reception on Steam is overwhelmingly positive, with around 34,000 reviews and a 94% approval rating. On Metacritic, the game also performs strongly, holding a Metascore of 91 and a User Score of 7.9.
Winter sale brings a 70% discount for the first time
Against the Storm typically sells for around $30 and, according to SteamDB, has never previously been discounted by more than 50%. As part of the Steam Winter Sale, the game is now available at a 70% discount for the first time, reducing the price to roughly $9. The offer runs until January 5 and may also appeal to handheld gamers, as the title is verified for the Steam Deck (which currently costs around $460 on Amazon).
