A limited edition hypercar from Tesla's archrival BYD recently beat the world top speed record from a production car, and made a Nürburgring racetrack lap time of 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds.
The U9 Xtreme, whose four electric motors offer a combined output of nearly 3,000 HP, managed to beat the Bugatti Chiron for the title of the world's fastest production car in the process, with a top speed of 496.22 km/h, or about 308 mph.
It has now been officially unveiled at the 2025 Auto Show in Guangzhou and BYD has displayed the limited edition hypercar, of which it will only produce 30, for all visitors to see and touch.
To achieve that world's fastest car title, BYD upgraded its e⁴ intelligent AWD and DiSus-X active body control systems with custom battery, tires, brakes, and body kit. The front and rear sport giant carbon fiber spoilers to increase downward pressure, while a dual-through hood, fender flares, and dual-layer rear diffuser complement the aerodynamic package.
The U9 Xtreme sports lightweight but extremely strong brake calipers made of titanium alloy and a custom carbon-ceramic braking kit that can decelerate from the maximum 500 km/h speed that the custom semi-slick GitiSport e·GTR2 PRO tires are rated for.
Perhaps the most interesting component that makes all that sustained up to 310 mph speed possible, is BYD's blade battery, developed specifically for the U9 Xtreme. Thanks to the dual-layer cooling system and custom cells optimized for minimal resistance, it features the insane 30C discharge capabilities. This essentially means that the U9's BYD battery can deliver 30x its total capacity in amps, providing short, but insanely powerful bursts of energy to the high-rev electric motors moving each wheel towards the world's fastest car speed record.
To top it all off, the U9 won't come with a seven-figure price as these limited edition hypercars often do, though it will cost above the quarter million mark in US dollars that its non-Xtreme sibling does. It is no coincidence that the top 3 ranking of the world's fastest EVs is now occupied by Chinese brands, starting with a 1.9-second 0-60 mph acceleration, while the Tesla Model S is a close fourth.
