Asustek Chairman hints at new tablet to battle iPad

While the choice of words may sound a bit like something out of a medieval story, Asus believes they have a weapon capable of fending off Apple’s upcoming iPad 2. In an interview with Computerworld.com, Asustek’s Chairman, Jonney Shih, claimed that Asus has a “secret weapon” that has not been shown previously and will be able to stand up to Apple’s tablet giant.

When asked about Apple’s new iPad 2 and how its introduction will affect the tablet market, Mr. Shih stated that Asus’s tablet components were chosen with the iPad in mind and “we will try to provide a "secret weapon," something we have not shown at this time but closer to the launch time we will show.

Unfortunately, when probed for more information about the device Mr. Shih did not acknowledge whether it will be a component or an entirely new device. His only reply was “I think its best not to say now. You will have to wait until the launch.”

The interview also included some of the Chairman’s projections for the future, how he believes cloud computing is the next big thing and that 3D TV’s will not prevail except in “smaller devices and without wearing glasses”.

Asus has been very active in the tablet market lately, releasing the EP121, the Eee Pad Slider and Transformer, and the Eee Pad MeMO. However, the little tidbit released by Mr. Shih makes us quite eager to find out what the iPad challenger will be.
