KNX, which stands for Konnex (meaning connection), is an OSI model-compliant connectivity standard in the smart home industry, one which enables harmonious integration of various electronic systems and smart appliances within a building - both residential and commercial.

KNX was conceived almost 35 years ago in Belgium and has evolved from three other standards, namely EHS, BatiBus and EIB with the ultimate goal of making electronic installations ready and adequate for the buildings of tomorrow.

KNX managed to establish itself as a global protocol, a versatile and reliable solution that replaced old centralized systems, often rigid and complex, with decentralized solutions offering autonomy and ease of use. Brands like Schneider Electric, Legrand, Siemens have been using it as the backbone of their smart home product lines.

KNX allows for a complete control of a building - lighting, dimming, heating, HVAC, audio and video, voice control, pool water quality and so much more. Its benefits are many.

1 - Interoperability

KNX enables products from a multitude of different brands to be compatible with each other, ensuring reliable connectivity.

2 - Energy Efficiency

The technology optimizes the building's energy consumption through smart lightning management, HVAC management and more, letting users reduce their house's carbon footprint and bills.

3 - Security

KNX uses encryption so that plain text data is never sent. It uses AES 128 CCM encryption offering robust data protection and also protects from unauthorized access and eavesdropping.

4 - Customizability

The number of products that can be banded together using KNX is very high - intercoms, security monitoring devices, energy management devices, and so on. KNX enables mix and matching different products to create a comprehensive integrated system.

5 - Real time control and monitoring

KNX supports remote access and real-time data analytics which allows users to manage their devices through a mobile application or web interface, making home environment management when away much simpler.
