ZTE has raised eyebrows with its first serious challenger to the high-end Android smartphone market with the impending launch of the Axon 30 Ultra. However, hopes that it might also be competitively prices have been dashed with a rumor pointing to a US$1,200 starting price.

ZTE is best known for making entry-level and mid-range smartphones, so it came as something of a surprise when its Axon 30 Ultra leaked (also possibly called the ZTE Axon 30 Pro+) with top-notch specs. Clearly targeted in the same bracket as smartphones like the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, there had been hopes the newcomer to the segment might be sharply priced. Those hopes, however, have been dashed with suggestions the device could be priced in the same US$1,200 ballpark.

The official unveiling of the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra isn’t until next week, so we will be waiting with baited breath to see whether the alleged pricing matches the official pricing. That said, it does feature all the types of specifications one might expect at that price point. This includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC mated to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage along with a 4,500 mAh battery and 55 W to 65 W fast-charging.

ZTE is really throwing everything at this device with rumors also pointing to a second-generation under-display selfie camera, but also three cameras featuring a 64 MP resolution coupled with a fourth 8 MP telephoto shooter. Capping things off is said to be a 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Even if it is worth the price ZTE is rumored to be asking for it, it will still be an uphill sell for a brand that is venturing into previously uncharted territory.
