The Toshiba Tecra A11 is intended as a desktop substitute for business users, and is designed with an emphasis on performance and features rather than portability. The Tecra A11 offers business users a decent level of performance in a laptop with almost nothing left out, and an excellent keyboard and display. However, the short battery life means that it is best regarded as a desktop replacement to be carried between sites rather than used while travelling.

Its size, weight and average battery life mean the Tecra A11 is not ideal for frequent use on the move and the absence of vPro for remote management may limit its interest to larger enterprises. Its low resolution screen is also a potentially limiting factor. Those caveats aside, however, the A11 is a speedy and very useable machine that offers good value – though there are rivals from HP and Sony that will do similar with more panache.

Toshiba may hit the headlines with its multi-touch enabled laptop, but as far as business customers are concerned its new Tecra models will be of rather more interest. Overall, we found ourselves pretty impressed with the Toshiba Tecra A11 and we look forward to getting hold of a review sample to see if we still feel the same way or if there are any significant flaws.

Reliable Business. The Tecra notebook, designed and produced by Toshiba, the Japanese giant, is a reliable office companion. The current A11 series attempts to attract customers with its price range and business quality features like a sturdy case and a variety of ports for extensive connectivity.

What it comes down to is whether you actually need everything that Toshiba has thrown into this machine or if you would be better served by something a little thinner, sleeker, and less utility-laden. But if you need a notebook computer that includes everything from Serial ATA to serial RS-232 and like having a host of handy utilities just a click away, the Tecra A11-S3540 might be just the system for you.

In the Tecra A11, Toshiba has created a very capable and affordable system for small business users. For $879, you get a fairly powerful processor, useful productivity features (such as the ability to create a hotspot on the fly), and budget-minded security utilities like Secure Digital Token. And if all that fails, Toshiba’s three-year warranty is very reassuring.

Lots of elements make up a good laptop: powerful performance, long battery life and the screen. The Toshiba Tecra A11 stands out thanks to its fantastic screen; there’s no irritating reflections to deal with, and the widescreen aspect ratio makes multitasking lots of applications a pleasure.

The array of ports includes DisplayPort, eSATA and even serial, and the Tecra has a spare DIMM socket to expand on the supplied memory in the future. And the above criticisms must all be measured against the $1375 price, which is one of the lowest here. You may want the Core i7 model for a true desktop replacement, but if your needs are more modest the Tecra A11 packs plenty of business appeal.

In the Tecra A11, Toshiba has created a very capable and affordable system for business users. For $1,349, you get a powerful processor, Nvidia graphics, and a high-resolution screenbut atrocious battery life. However, this laptop is loaded with useful productivity features (such as the ability to create a hotspot on the fly), security utilities like Secure Digital Token, and a three-year warranty. Before taking the plunge, though, make sure you need discrete graphics; otherwise, you could probably get by on a system like the 14-inch HP EliteBook 8440p, which costs about $400 less, has a more durable and stylish design, and lasts about twice as long on a charge.

Toshiba's Tecra range is firmly targeted at business users, and the A11 is perhaps the most mainstream model in the range thanks to its 15.6-inch screen and Intel Core i5 processor.
Overall, the Toshiba Tecra A11 is a competent business laptop that offers good performance, a decent screen and an impressive range of ports. In saying that, the computer's chunky design and limited amount of RAM are a tad disappointing.

Despite the cheap look and feel of the chassis, the A11-11H comes recommended. Performance can't be knocked, usability is excellent and there's a strong range of features, although more storage space would have been appreciated.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA NVS 2100M:
Business graphics card that should be based on the GT218 core (e.g. GeForce 210M) but with drivers that are optimized for stability and compatibility in business applications). Compared to the NVS 3100, the 2100 features a lower clock speed.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

Intel Core i5:
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
430M:
The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
560M:
The Core i5-560M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks also between 2.67-3.2 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i3:
330M:
The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
620M:
The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.

2.5 kg:
2.6 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
76.25%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
