Back when thin-and-light laptops were all the rage in 2009, a surprise contender for the most affordable thin 13-inch laptop came from Toshiba. The Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345 is a solid, slim, and affordable 13-inch tweener laptop for ultraportable computing; however, in a landscape filled with thinner and faster alternatives, it no longer stands alone.

In our review of the Intel-powered Toshiba Satellite T235-S1350 we called it the best value-priced ultraportable on the market today. The T235D has the same great looks, industry leading keyboard, and solid performance of the T235 for a little less coin, while offering better graphics performance. However, unless the price delta between the two configurations grows larger than $20 to $30, we recommend the Intel-powered T235 for its longer battery life, better wireless performance, and faster transfer speeds.

After going through all the benchmarks, features, etc. we come to the final tally, and for once we have an AMD laptop that we can recommend without hesitation. You're not going to have a great gaming experience on the T235D, but for everything else it works well and the price is right. It's easy to find laptops that are significantly faster, but such laptops cost more and generally fall short in the mobility areas of battery life and size.

Simply put, the Toshiba Satellite T235-S1350 is the best value-priced ultraportable on the market today, mixing great looks with an industry leading keyboard, strong battery life, and solid performance. The AMD-powered Satellite T235D-S1345 offers somewhat better graphics performance and is $20 to $30 cheaper, but its lesser battery life, weaker wireless scores, and slower storage speeds aren't worth the miniscule savings. When it comes to ultraportable 13-inch notebooks, you won't find a more attractive system anywhere near this price range.

Nile is solid. The processor performance of the Toshiba T235 is right in line with what you'd expect from Intel's Ultra-Low Voltage processors, but the graphics processor easily outclasses the Intel GMA 4500 found in Core 2 Duo based CULV laptops. Overall, the performance benchmarks make it very clear that Nile is a huge stride forward for AMD. My only worry with Nile is Intel’s CULV 2010 platform, which uses Core i3 and i5 processors instead of Core 2 Duos. AMD has consistently been just one step behind Intel over the last few years, and Nile may share this fate. Nile’s success will ultimately come down to price and availability. The current crop of Intel CULV 2010 based laptops is hard to find and more expensive at the moment, making them less attractive than they should be, but that could change.

For those among us that can’t spring for the likes of the $1,599 Toshiba Portégé R700 but still need a compact, lightweight machine, the Toshiba Satellite T235-S1350 may be the ideal compromise. The T235 is a light 13-inch ultraportable with more features than its price suggests. Its performance is middling but more than adequate for the money.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 4225: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) that is able to decode HD videos (thanks to the UVD2). Technically a slower clocked HD 4250.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

AMD Turion II Neo:
K625: Dual Core Entry level CPU for small subnotebooks on a performance level with the SU7300 Intel Core 2 Duo.
Intel Core i3:
330M:
The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
AMD Athlon II Neo:
K325: Entry level processor with two cores, integrated DDR3 memory controller and a low clock rate designed for subnotebooks.
Intel Pentium:
U5400: Entry level dual core CPU of the Arrandale series. Does not support Turbo Boost (for the CPU), Hyperthreading, Virtualization and AES. Due to the slow clock speed, the performance is only sufficient for non demanding applications.

74.67%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
