Tesla reminds that its EVs have advantages in the freezing cold and snow
In the past few days, a lot of social and mainstream media brouhaha was devoted to Tesla owners in the Chicago area who inform about dead batteries and long Supercharger wait times in the freezing spell that swooped across their region. Seeing as the complaints were mainly directed to the charging infrastructure performance and availability in the cold, Tesla chose not to address these complaints directly.
Instead, it posted a timely "No ice scrapers needed" ad to remind everyone that its EVs have advantages in frost and snow, too. The ad showcases the Defrost Mode feature available straight from the Tesla app which preheats the cabin and melts away snow and ice from the windows of the electric vehicle from a distance.
Granted, the Defrost mode option is not exclusive to Tesla electric cars, or not even exclusive to EVs at all, as many an ICE vehicle driver with the remote start option could attest. Still, Tesla chose exactly those days of Arctic blasts sweeping across the US and clocking record low temps to remind everyone that they can have a clean vehicle ready to drive away, all from the comfort of their home or office.
Needless to say, the ad would be of little comfort to folks who found their Tesla with a dead battery in the airport parking lot, or couldn't precondition and had to tow it to a station only to find the chargers busy or unable to resurrect it two days in a row.
All those Tesla owners in Norway or Canada, however, who have been using them in subzero temperatures, ice and snow for many years already, can only sympathize with the Chicago area EV charger station flukes during the Arctic blasts of 2024.
