Tesla has finally added the ability to power home devices, camping gear, or work tools, directly from a Model Y, its bestselling vehicle.
Unfortunately, the so-called vehicle-to-load (V2L) ability that turns the Model Y battery into one giant power bank, is only switched on for the newest 2026 Performance trim, or the Model Y with the shortest range out there.
So far, Tesla has only been offering V2L and vehicle-to-home (V2H) support via the Cybertruck's Powershare functionality with the help of the respective Outlet Adapter. Said $80 adapter can now be used to power home gear like fridges in case of an emergency, or tools and stoves when out camping with the Model Y Performance.
For the rest of Tesla's Model Y roster, there are third-party solutions like the NACS V2L EV Discharger, and the hope that Tesla can bring the functionality to other trims going forward.
The Tesla customer service reps have also confirmed that the new Model Y Performance also comes with V2H output to power the electric system of one's whole house, but Tesla has officially confirmed only the V2L feature so far.
Having vehicle-to-load support has long been on the wishlist of Model Y owners, and they are finally getting official support, albeit on the priciest Performance trim that costs north of $57,000 after the tax credit expiration, unless leased with Tesla's new $6,500 discount.
