Sony's smart design, long battery life, and a big 16-inch screen, make the Vaio FW140--the first Centrino 2 laptop we've seen--an excellent, but still portable, media hub.

In short, if you're looking for a fast notebook with the latest in beautiful, functional screens, this Windows Vista Ultimate-equipped unit delivers the goods. And Sony will have 12 fixed configurations--starting at around $1000--from which to choose in retail outlets and online. And while the built-in speakers are anything but entertaining, you'll have no worries if you're happy with headphones.

Sony VAIO FW Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The VAIO FW is a great step forward for Sony, and a worthy competitor to the Dell Studio 15 or even the Toshiba A305. The design is great, but more importantly the build quality is excellent. It feels solid, with a reasonably firm screen cover and keyboard that feels as if a child could walk across it. Performance was more than adequate in every area except 3D performance, but hopefully Sony decides to offer a higher performing graphics card as an option at a later date. The only real flaw that stood out to me was the screen, with its uneven backlight. Hopefully this is a preproduction unit flaw, and not something that shows up on shipping models.

With a 2.53GHz processor, the Sony VAIO VGN-FW11ZU should be a nippy machine, and the ATI graphics card allows the use of some modern games. Blu-ray playback was short of expectation though, especially given Sony's weight behind the format.

Plenty of laptops arrive at PC Pro with entertainment in mind, but few are as capable or well-featured as the new Sony VAIO VGN-FW11ZU. It's one of the first machines of any kind - desktops included - that we've seen with a Blu-ray writer, for instance, and a raft of Centrino 2 components provide more than enough power to cope with high definition video playback. Centrino 2 Kino. The Sony Vario FW11M is one of the currently low priced models and offers therefore only a blu ray ROM drive (reader, no writer) and decreased hardware devices. Also, one must do without the well known Sony Dual Lamp Technology. In the following short review you will find out if they saved at the right corners.

Vaio VGN-FW139E goes after the smug
Source: Fudzilla English Archive.org version

The Vaio performs well across the board. It's a well balanced machine, suitable for many uses, affordable and good looking. We do have some complaints, but nothing big. So should you get one? Well, it depends. In case you're looking at $1,000 15.4-inch machines, the Vaio will offer you an extra inch of screen real estate and a higher resolution in a very compact package. Let's face it, if you're planning to carry your notebook around all day long, you'll get a 12 or 13-inch model to begin with. If not, the 16.4-inch Vaio is just marginally larger and heavier than a 15.4-inch notebook and it's a very tempting alternative. If amateur video is your game, or if you just watch a lot of movies on your notebook, it will be great.

Sony VAIO FW139E/H User Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The Sony VAIO FW139E/H was a good purchase for me. The features, build, and price were right, and I am content with the purchase. It is more than enough for any engineering CAD applications I will be using for undergraduate studies, and is great for multitasking and mild gaming. The VAIO FW's CPU and FSB speed, 3GB of RAM, and Radeon GPU are a wonderful combo for mobile power. The aspect ratio of the screen is perfect for entertainment. The build quality is fantastic; Sony does not deliver anything but their best in hardware. The downside is insignificant. For someone looking for the best battery life, being able to play the latest game on High settings, or good sound reproduction, this is not the laptop they should look into. This laptop is fine for the mild power user who still wants portability. Of course, my vision of portability probably differs from someone who finds 6.4lbs heavy. It is nothing like the large VAIO AR, however. The VAIO FW is an FZ in size, and half-way between an FZ and AR in power.

As if a full HD screen, Blu-ray, and Core i7 processing power weren’t enough, Sony includes its new TransferJet technology in this multimedia laptop. With the VAIO F, Sony packs a lot into a very good multimedia notebook. You’ll get a full HD 16.4-inch display, an Intel Core i7 processor, discrete Nvidia graphics, and Blu-ray playback. At $1,719, the price seems steep, but it’s not much more expensive than competing machines.

Sony’s Vaio FW31ZJ entertainment notebook has a 16:9 aspect screen,
full HD support, and a built-in Blu-ray drive. The stylish magnesium
chassis is finished in silver with a mesh grille above the keyboard
housing the speakers and media centre control buttons; this is matched
by the mesh-like finish to the touchpad. However, at 3.2kg it’s at the
higher limit of what you’d want to lug around. Sony’s FW31ZJ is a very
good, if pricey, full HD entertainment notebook with an excellent screen.

Considering its price tag of $949, the fixed-configuration retail Sony Vaio VGN-FW351J/H has the basic components--namely the processor and graphics adapter--of a less expensive laptop. On the upside, instead of a better price-to-performance ratio, the FW-series Vaio gets you an optical drive capable of playing Blu-ray discs (in addition to CD/DVD playback and creation). While its overall specs are somewhat lower end for the price, the Sony Vaio VGN-FW351J/H makes up for it with sharp design and Blu-ray playback.

A stylish, well-specified media centre, but less powerful than we'd have liked. Sony's VAIO range is one of the world's best known laptop brands, famous for its high quality, stylish designs. The VAIO VGN-FW31E is a well-specified widescreen media centre notebook, but it falls short on performance. When used for home entertainment, the VGN-FW31E is a stylish and well-specified laptop. For content creation, however, it's low performance falls short, so consider your needs fully before buying.

Not everyone needs a laptop to lug around all day — some people just want something smaller than a desktop PC that they can move around at home. This is the realm of the desktop replacement PC and if you’re happy to spend a few quid, you can pick up a portable that packs all of the power of a mid-range desktop — and the Sony VAIO VGN-FW41E/H is a prime example. Good-looking and a great performer, there’s a lot to like about the VAIO VGN-FW41E/H and even Sony’s price isn’t too outrageous for the specification on offer.

If you're looking for a high-end desktop-replacement laptop and the Sony Vaio VGN-AW31M/H is too bulky for your liking, the Vaio VGN-FW41E/H may be more up your street. It's essentially a scaled-down version of that 18.4-inch monster, with a lower specification and price, but it's still an impressive lump of laptop. It's available for around £880. The price may be high, but the Sony VAIO VGN-FW41E/H is a premium machine, and its performance justifies the outlay.   In a growing field of Blu-ray-playing laptops, it's important to take note of Sony, who created the Blu-ray format in the first place. The company's Vaio laptops, particularly its higher-end lines, tend to be specifically oriented toward media playback. As an above-average Blu-ray-playing laptop with impressive looks and good under-the-hood power, Sony's Vaio FW480J/T is a solid portable multimedia machine.

The Sony VAIO VGN-FW198UH was one of the first laptops to showcase a 16:9 aspect ratio display, a beautiful 16-inch widescreen that fit the lines of the 1080p format to a T. (It's a format that's commonly paired with high-end LCD panels.) But as the field of 16-inch laptops grew, so did the bargains that reflected a new shopping trend in this troubled economy. That said, the latest in Sony's FW series, the VAIO VGN-FW390 ($2,099 direct), lacks the pricing aggression of its peers, as this configuration crosses over the $2,000 mark—and few laptops, right now, cost this much. The Sony VAIO VGN-FW390 scored phenomenally well on speed tests, but a $2,000 configuration is way too expensive in the 16-inch space.

Unsurprisingly, multimedia systems and desktop replacement laptops are one of the most popular categories for the average consumer, especially for those short on space. Today we're looking at the 16.4in Sony VAIO VGN-FW48E/H, part of Sony's FW Series that launched last year. Sony's VAIO VGN-FW48E/H is a generally good multimedia laptop severely let down by its steep price, for which you can get far more from other manufacturers - or even from Sony itself.

Rich in Minerals. Magnesium isn't only healthy as a trace element and helps against aching muscles but is also a good building material for notebooks - as a metal. That's what Sony thought and made the FW range's chassis out of the light material. You can read if the 16.4 inch bolide can convince in multimedia routine in this comprehensive review of the Sony Vaio FW51MF.

Several months ago, one of our favorite retail laptops was the Sony Vaio FW480J/T. Besides offering no-hassle Blu-ray playback and a large if not full-HD 1,600x900-pixel 16.4-inch screen, it had decent discrete graphics that could handle many mainstream games. With Blu-ray playback, a large screen and decent discrete graphics, the Sony Vaio FW560F/T is a very compelling sub-$1,000 multimedia notebook.

Powerful and has a great screen, making for an impressive, if expensive, laptop. The Sony VAIO VGN-FW51ZF/H is a mid-sized media centre, offering a blend of power and portability. Sitting at the top of the FW range, it provides a specification and performance to put most other laptops in the shade. While we found that it's not as good an all-rounder as the Acer Aspire 8935G, if you need to carry out multiple tasks or edit HD videos, then it's the best choice here.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470: Faster clocked HD 3450 and successor of the HD 2400 XT but with DirectX 10.1 and due to the new 55nm process, higher clockspeeds. Avivo HD video functions allow the decoding of HD videos.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: The Hd 3650 is a middle class graphics card (in 2008) and compareable to an 8600M GT GPU from Nvidia. It is fabricated in 55nm process and due to Avivo video engine the graphic card can support the processor with several video operations (HD video too).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: The Mobility HD 4650 is based on the Desktop 4650 architecture, but features a lower clock rate of memory and core. Depending on the core clock (450-550MHz possible) and the used memory (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 with 600-800 MHz possible) the mobile 4650 can show a different performance. The current consumption of the chip alone ranges from 15-25W. Features Avivo HD video features.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T9600:

High-end dual core CPU and similar to the Core 2 Duo P9700 but with a higher power consumption (35 W versus 28 W). Should be sufficient for all games of 2009.

T9400:

The T9400 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo P9500 with a higher TDP of 35 Watt.

P8400:

Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).

T5800: Entry level dual core processor based on the Merom core without Virtualization support and a low maximum temperature.

T9550:

The T9550 is a middle class dual-core CPU of the Core 2 Duo line and similar to the P9600 (except for the higher TDP of the T9550 - 35 vs 25 W). The performance of the T9550 should be sufficient for most applications and games of 2009.

T6400: Entry level dual core processor based on the Penryn core with only 2 MB level 2 cache and a low clock speed.

P7350:

Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.

P8700:

Mid-range dual core processor with 3 MB level 3 cache and a TDP of 25 Watt.

P7450: Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.8 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

3.3 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

76.29%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
