Sony CEO confirms new tablet for this summer

Japanese newspaper quotes Howard Stringer on a Sony Android tablet for release later this year in the United States.

A short report from Bloomberg mentions Japanese Nikkei newspaper for citing Sony CEO Howard Stringer on the rumored Android tablet. According to the source, a Sony tablet running Android 3.0 is finally in the works, and could even be released in the U.S. market first.

The new info verifies previous rumors from Engadget about a Sony Android tablet coming later this year. As one of the few major computer corporations without tablet offerings, it was only a matter of time before Sony confirmed its first tablet. Beyond that point, however, further details about the tablet size, processor, features, price, and availability are all still a mystery.

The tablet Bloomberg is referring to is likely to be different than the Sony Ericsson tablet shown at MWC earlier this year.

To stand out from the crowded tablet market, the Sony tablet could be coming in a unique shape optimized for one-handed usability, as previously rumored by Engadget.  The design would shift most of its internal weight towards one side of the tablet instead of the usual even distribution.

While the hardware is still up in the air, we expect the tablet to be fully compatible with the recently announced Playstation Suite software. This would allow the tablet to run certain PSOne games in a manner similar to the Xperia Play smartphone. Remote play through a connected PS3 would also be another much-welcomed function, as the option has already been available for PSP owners for years.
