Samsung unveils PM830 lineup of notebook SSDs

Teaser
New series will support SATA 3.0 and come in capacities up to 512GB

Samsung announced today its new lineup of notebook-size SATA 3.0 SSDs supporting up to 6Gb/s.

Called the PM830 series, the SSD models are expected to be available at up to 512GB capacities. In order to reach such densities, the PM830 series will utilize 20nm MLC NAND memory chips with a proprietary controller.  Overall, the Samsung SSD should provide raw sequential read and write speeds of 500MB/s and 350MB/s, respectively.

Samsung’s new line up of advanced SSDs will raise the performance bar to the next level for ultra-slim notebooks and tablets and accelerate growth of the market for high-performance SSDs,” said Wanhoon Hong of Samsung Electronics memory sales and marketing division. NAND-based memory has always been one of Samsung’s many specialties, so the company’s jump to support the 6Gb/s SATA interface was just a matter of time.

Several competing SSD manufacturers have already announced or released SATA 3.0 compatible drives, however, including Kingston, Seagate and Corsair. Conversely, Samsung is so far one of the very few manufacturers to soon offer a 512GB SSD with full support for SATA 3.0 bandwidth speeds. While Intel offers a 600GB SSD as part of its 320 Series, the drives are limited to a 3Gb/s interface.

The PM830 should now be shipping to OEMs in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB sizes. A standalone version for consumers is not mentioned in the press release, but could be announced at a later date. As a result, official prices have yet to be announced.
