Though less than a year old, the 15.6-inch MSI GT60 and 17.3-inch GT70 gamer notebooks have already received at least one major hardware upgrade in an attempt to stay on top of the competition. Now that Windows 8 has officially launched, families of MSI notebooks will be jumping in headstrong to the latest Microsoft release for much the same reason.
According to an MSI press release earlier today, the manufacturer will be updating to the Windows 7 successor on notebooks ranging from the low-end GE and AMD-based GX series all the way up to the high-end GT series. Users who have recently bought or are going to purchase an MSI notebook before the end of the year can receive a free Windows 8 upgrade (or Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $15). Though MSI promises "enhanced system performance" for its users, any tangible performance improvements from Steam and other PC titles may only be minimal.
Note that the Windows 8 upgrade will apply to both MSI notebooks and tablets as well, specifically the WindPad 100W. Expect more Windows 8 reviews to come as manufacturers prepare their first wave of notebooks sporting the new OS. For our first notebook review with the platform, see our Dell XPS 12 review here.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s. When I'm not managing day-to-day activities and US review articles on Notebookcheck, you can catch me following the eSports scene and the latest gaming news.
