MSI's GT683R is definitely a powerful machine, but its peripherals (built-in as they are) leave something to be desired. This is a desktop replacement, so it's likely you'll have an external mouse, keyboard, and even speakers, but it'd be nice if these felt like an option rather than a necessity.

This is definitely one of the best gaming laptops currently available and it does that for a sub $2000 price. It has Nvidia’s latest notebook oriented video card and a Core i7 processor, as well as 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, so we can easily say that this is a very solid configuration for gaming, at least for the next 12 to 18 months.

Overall, we were very pleased with the performance of the GeForce GTX 560M as well as the MSI GT683R in general. The notebook also includes a few extras such as Dynaudio and THX TruStudio Pro to enhance the multimedia experience. If you like the aggressive aesthetics and are in the market for a powerful notebook that's speedy enough to churn through DX11 games and HD multimedia, the MSI GT683R is worthy of consideration.

When we reviewed the MSI GT660R last year, we gave it high marks for its overall performance, edgy design, and killer sound system, but we lamented its loud fans, short battery life, and relatively low-resolution display. The GT683R delivers superb gaming and application performance for dedicated mobile gamers. It delivers very good value considering what's inside.

The turbo fan. The turbo fan is designed to drastically increase fan speed when the laptop overheats. While this is a great quality to the laptop, it has not been tweaked to perfection. The turbo fan does not always kick in when the laptop overheats, and there is no easy way for the user to manually turn on the turbo fan.

With all the orange lights, we might have expected a backlit keyboard, though just an avarage typing experience would have made this a quite briliant notebook. But for anyone wanting top-notch capaabilities, get your hands on an external keyboard, and perhaps a gamer’s mouse, and the MSI GT683DXR is a superlative notebook.

You know the idiom: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Well, MSI, unfortunately some of it is broken, but by and large, the GT683DXR manages to pack quite a punch -- a surprisingly long lasting one at that -- and does it all for an admirable price. As with all things, there are niggles, sure, but when it comes down to it, you'll be hard-pressed to find more bang for your mobile gaming buck.

Starting with the build quality and design of the GT683DXR we have a system which very much falls into the love it or hate it category. For some the silver trims and orange LEDs will be a bit of a turn off, for others it is something that little bit different that elevates the unit past being a black box.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M:
The successor of the GeForce GTX 460M based on the new GF116 chip. The performance is about 13% better than the 460M but with similar power requirements due to hardware optimizations.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M: High-end mobile GPU based on a stripped down GF114 chip.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i5:
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

3.4 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
