Hands on: Lenovo ThinkPad T431 review
Source: Techradar English Archive.org version
As far as we're concerned, anything Lenovo does to make the ThinkPad look sleeker is just gravy. It's a balance of performance and portability at a reasonable price point that make a ThinkPad, but the visual refresh is appreciated. So far the T431 fits the bill, and we look forward to getting this ultrabook in for a full review.

Lenovo ThinkPad T431s

Lenovo, one of the largest laptop manufacturers, wants to dominate the laptop market and continues to introduce new products. Recently, Lenovo has launched their thinnest and lightest laptop, namely the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s. This laptop is wrapped in matte black color which Lenovo calls Graphite Black. To strengthen the casing, Lenovo uses magnesium alloy and carbon so that it feels really solid. This ultrabook features a 14-inch display with a native resolution of 1,600 x 900 pixels. It is equipped with comfortable input devices: keyboard, a large touchpad, and a red trackpoint in the middle of the keyboard. For the processor, the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s comes with an Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 and between 4 and 12 GB RAM.

The performance of this ultrabook is great – it can run almost all programs and apps in Windows 8 with ease. Besides, it also has a long battery life. However, it still has a downside: the screen. While other laptop manufactures incorporate fullHD displays with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels in their products today, this ultrabook comes with a lower resolution. The display should be much better to suit the premium look of the laptop. Still, this laptop is one of the best 14-inch ultrabooks that Lenovo has ever produced. If you’re looking for a highly reliable business ultrabook, the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s is something to consider.

85% Review Lenovo ThinkPad T431s Ultrabook | Notebookcheck
A reimagined T Series. It is the thinnest and lightest ThinkPad T Series model to date, but does it retain the rigidity and longevity of its predecessors? Lenovo is betting big on a new slimmer design and revamped touchpad to attract the attention of Ultrabook customers. Find out in this review if these hardware tweaks have paid off.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T431s offers an exceptional design that few notebooks match at this price point. With its durable build quality, portable form factor and above average battery life, the T431s is the ideal travel notebook. Users can also rest assured that the device is a pleasure to use thanks to its high-quality keyboard and responsive touchpad. Business users looking for a device aimed at travel who require modest performance and don't mind conceding on the display will be well served by the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s. However, users may also want to consider the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon as an alternative option; the device offers better performance within an even more portable form factor and is currently available on Lenovo's website at a comparable price.

Lenovo's ThinkPad T431s is a comfortable mix of old and new. Like past T-series laptops, it is first and foremost built for business and the wear and tear of daily use -- on and away from a desk. A buttoned-down T-series with some modern touches, the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s is a business laptop you won't mind traveling with unless you need the latest and greatest components.

This ThinkPad refresh brings the mainstay T Series closer to today's thin and light ultrabook standards. Business users will appreciate the superb keyboard, host of security options, and other features, but the redone touch pad and lackluster display may give them pause.

Ultimately, the choice of laptops falls to your IT buyer and the current installed base of systems. If you're a Lenovo shop, the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s is a worthy successor to the ThinkPad faithful, though the new trackpad may take a little while to get used to. The Dell Latitude 6430u as reviewed has significantly more performance under its hood, so it holds on to the Editors' Choice for business laptops, but if your company relies on Lenovo systems, the T431s is a very good workhorse PC for your rank and file workers.

Lenovo’s new design makes a lot of changes, and change doesn’t usually come without compromise – and even, at times, sacrifice. Lenovo put to rest some of the traits that longtime fans consider crucial to the brand, such as tactile touchpad buttons and a beveled keyboard. This Ultrabook simply doesn’t look or feel as durable as its predecessors. And that’s a shame.

The ThinkPad T431s combines relatively long battery life, a high-res screen, a large touchpad, a responsive keyboard and a good low-light webcam and places all of that functionality into a durable chassis that weighs just 3.4 pounds. Unfortunately, narrow viewing angles, slightly high temperatures and mediocre performance hold this notebook back from achieving a higher rating.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA NVS 5400M:

Business-oriented graphics card based on the 40nm GeForce GT 630M with slightly higher base clock speeds than a GeForce GT 435M.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i5:

3320M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 Graphics, core clock 2.6 - 3.3 GHz

3437U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 2.9 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1200 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

No weight comment found (one expected)!

72.65%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
