If you’ve ever wanted to a live a medieval fantasy sans magic, dragons, and elves, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is one of the best video games to have done it. Set in 15th-century Bohemia, Kingdom Come: Deliverance tries to be an authentic medieval experience on the backs of rich storytelling, a clunky-yet-satisfying melee combat system, deep NPC encounters, and a detailed open world.
As such, despite being Warhorse Studios’ first game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an utterly unique experience that merits a playthrough for fans of RPGs. Steam has now made playing KCD super easy, thanks to a massive 80% discount. The game is now retailing for just $5.99.
The key quality that make Kingdom Come: Deliverance stand out from other RPGs set in or inspired by medieval Europe is the approach Warhorse took for the open world setting and the overall gameplay design. KCD feels mechanical and grounded, where you have to keep track of even mundane things like eating, the clothes you wear, the wear and tear on your items, etc.
Adding to the immersion, the NPCs in Kingdom Come: Deliverance are also reactive to how you act. For instance, IGN notes in their review that, if your clothes are in a rough shape, the nobles will be “less than impressed with your scruffiness”. This could lead to difficulty in completing quests that require interactions with nobles, limited dialogues, and so on.
Similarly, melee combat in KCD is also intricate. While it might come across as janky, boring, and unnecessarily difficult, it is quite rewarding once you get the hang of it. IGN describes it as “kinetic, precise, and polished”.
Typing it all together is good storytelling and a beautifully realized open world full of lush forests, lived-in towns, and bustling ins.
