A noticeably longer Tesla Model Y has been filmed on public roads in China, spiking speculation that this is the upcoming six-seat Model Y L that Tesla teased for a fall release there.
The alleged Model Y is covered with test mule camouflage both at the rear and at the front. Curiously, Tesla has also hidden half of the C-pillar and the rear door handles from plain sight.
Coincidentally, Tesla might simply be covering a redesigned C-pillar that makes the SUV higher to provide more headroom for the third row of seats it will reportedly have. The covered rear looks indeed a tad chubbier than the current aerodynamic design of the five-seat Model Y, with less of a trunk door slant, hinting at a roomier interior.
The new Model Y L logo hints at three rows of seats indeed, though, and there will be more leaks to tell the exact configuration before its release date this fall.
Tesla needn't have bothered with covering all that much, since the Model Y L design already leaked in full thanks to the local vehicle certification database. It confirmed the larger dimensions of the six-seat Model Y, with a seven inches longer body, six inches longer wheelbase, and nearly two inches more of a vehicle height.
This means that the first 3-row Model Y won't feel as cramped for passengers in the back seats as the seven-seater, where Tesla just throws two child seats in the trunk of the five-seater and calls it a day.
Still, the camouflage is done in such a way that one can't really tell if there is a third row of seats or how big they are. A good example of what Tesla might do is the six-seat Model X version, which has four captain chairs in the first two rows and two regular seats at the back. Going in and out of that third row is much easier on the Model X thanks to the falcon wing doors, though, so it remains to be seen if and how will Tesla address that.
Some rumors point to a Model Y L release outside of China and Tesla's Lars Moravy hinted that a Model Y with more seats is coming to the US later this year, though he likely meant a seven-seater version, hopefully with a longer wheelbase as well.
