In Colt Canyon, you play as a nameless gunslinger battling through a hostile canyon filled with enemies, traps and bandit camps – all in search of your kidnapped partner. The game embraces classic roguelike mechanics: procedurally generated levels and permadeath ensure that every run is unique and ends when you die. Any gear you find, such as weapons, ammo or tools, is lost upon death. However, you can unlock new playable characters by rescuing prisoners or completing challenges. These characters come with unique starting loadouts and remain available for future runs.
In its review, gaming outlet Nintendo Life called Colt Canyon an “excellent roguelike with razor-sharp gameplay.” According to the editors, that precision is the game’s greatest strength. With tight twin-stick controls, more than 100 weapons and a well-balanced mix of tactics, stealth kills and fast-paced action, the game stays engaging and intense throughout. The difficulty is tough but fair, and much like genre hits such as Hotline Miami, Colt Canyon quickly becomes addictive. However, the steep learning curve may be a hurdle for newcomers, and the minimalist, blood-soaked pixel art – while effective in capturing the gritty Wild West vibe – might not appeal to everyone.
Overall, Nintendo Life gave Colt Canyon a solid 8 out of 10, with the positives clearly outweighing the negatives. The picture on Metacritic is more mixed, showing a Metascore of 72 and a User Score of 6.6. However, the latter is based on just 10 reviews, so it’s not particularly representative. On Steam, the response is much more enthusiastic. With over 1,200 reviews and a 90% approval rating, it’s clear the game has struck a chord with the community.
