The HP TouchSmart tx2z stands alone as a rare example of a consumer-focused convertible tablet PC. We're not sure if this is because non-business-related laptop users don't see the value of a touch-screen tablet, but hopefully they'll catch on soon. The HP TouchSmart tx2z Tablet PC has the features, functions, and price to convert consumer laptop users to tablet users. We just wish it could live a little longer away from an outlet.

Building on the success of its TouchSmart IQ816, an all-in-one desktop with a massive touch screen, HP decided to make a mobile version. Since the HP Pavilion tx2000z already had touch and tablet features built in, it was the obvious candidate to inherit the IQ816's intuitive interface. The HP TouchSmart TX2z takes its touch capabilities further. It's the first Windows-based multitouch (responsive to specific gestures made with more than one finger) tablet, trumping the IQ816's single-touch functions. Being the first to market, however, does not guarantee success. Its fan noise is almost unbearable, the multitouch functions are buggy, and a bloated software suite is crippling. Between the fan noises, a heavy chassis, a bloated software suite, and the sweltering processor, it's tough to recommend the TX2z as a primary laptop, let alone a tablet.

With its advanced touch screen and the slick media apps that make use of it, the HP TouchSmart tx2z makes the tablet PC not so niche.

The HP TouchSmart tx2z is a great deal-- it's got serious processing power and most of the trimmings of a full sized notebook in a 12" tablet chassis. We love the multi-touch technology from N-trig and it really shines in Windows 7. Multi-touch is the way of the future in the Windows world, and the tx2z is ready now. HP's Reaction Imprint finish looks great and build quality is very good. If you're looking for a tablet that is powerful enough to be your primary notebook, the TouchSmart does the job and for much less money than other all-arounders like the Toshiba M750. Drawbacks for the budget sticker? The AMD platform requires more fan action and this bugger can get loud. The viewing angle is limited which means you'll need to angle it just right to get the best brightness and colors when in tablet mode.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.

AMD Turion X2 Ultra: The AMD Turion X2 Ultra is part of the Puma platform and a mixture of the old K9 core (form the Turion 64 X2) and some parts of the K10 architecture (memorycontroller, hypertransport, crossbar switch from the Phenom). Because of the increased L2 cache ("Ultra" CPUs) and the improved memory controller, the performance increased a bit. Still a similar clocked Core 2 Duo is noticably faster.
ZM-86: Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo. The ZM-86 is the fastest CPU of the ZM series and a middle class CPU in 2008.
ZM-82:
Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo.

66%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
