With a base that's filled with features, a hardware configuration that supplies good performance and management tools that can be useful, the ProBook 6550b is definitely a laptop worth considering. The HP ProBook 6550b's 6-cell, 55 Watt-hour battery lasted 2hr 12min in our rundown test, in which we disable power management, enable Wi-Fi, maximise the screen's brightness and loop an Xvid-encoded video. This is only two minutes off what the ProBook 6540b recorded with the same battery and only a slightly slower CPU speed. You could get a lot more life out of this battery by employing a balanced power profile, lowering the brightness and letting the screen switch off during idle periods.

Triple-Core. The upscale office class from HP is called ProBook. Can the AMD variant with three cores impress us as much as its Intel 6540b counterpart? A similarly high rating makes us hopeful.

Professional companion. The HP ProBook 6550b is geared toward small to mid-sized businesses and therefore comes with a comprehensive package of security features. But its not only there that the notebook scores highly, but rather also impresses in terms of its build quality.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
ATI Radeon HD 4250: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) for AMD processors with Avivo HD support and technically a higher clocked HD 4200.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v: Renamed HD 4550 GPU with a slightly higher clocked memory speed and therefore an entry level graphics card with DirectX 10.1 support.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i5:
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
560M:
The Core i5-560M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks also between 2.67-3.2 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
AMD Phenom II X3:
N830: Mobile 3-core laptop processor based on the desktop Athlon II X3.
N850: Mobile 3-core laptop processor based on the desktop Athlon II X3.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.5 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.727 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
79.89%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
