Entertainment is the HP Chromebook x2’s bread and butter. Rich speakers and a bright 11-inch, 2K display offer quality experiences for both music listening and video viewing. But for a device made with students in mind, the HP Chromebook x2 offers a lackluster working experience. Web browsing may be smooth and snappy, but other apps don’t have quite the same speed or performance. Also, the detachable keyboard makes for a nice addition, but it’s hard to keep your grip without it which made me hesitant to use it as a tablet instead. If performance is what attracts you, it might be worth your while to check out the $749 Asus Chromebook Cx9. You lose the stylish design and the HQ display, but gain the specs of a decent regular laptop in Chromebook form.

So you're in the market for a detachable 2-in-1—a tablet you can use either by itself, or with a keyboard and stylus? Apple's 10.9-inch iPad Air is a good choice—in fact, a PCMag Editors' Choice winner—at $599. But if you're willing to think different, HP's 11-inch Chromebook x2 costs the same—with twice the memory and the keyboard and pen that Apple will charge you an extra $428 for. Tablet shoppers rarely consider Chromebooks, but the HP x2 favors the bold. It doesn't perform as well as comparably priced Chromebook laptops (and we still consider our Editors' Choice favorite, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, a better value among Chromebook detachables), but it fills a nifty niche.

The HP Chromebook X2 11 could steal the Duet's throne as the best Chrome OS tablet once it gets more regular discounts that put it in the $450-$350 range. It's the first Chrome OS tablet that I actually want to throw in my purse and run off to Epcot for an afternoon of reading and light gaming while I relax on Katsura's wraparound porch. The level of care taken with the details and the hardware is sublime. Many of my fellow reviewers — and many users — have soured on the HP Chromebook X2 11 because they expected it to be a powerhouse at $600. The Snapdragon 7c compute platform excels at casual computing and content consumption, not full-time work, and as a companion device to supplement your home desktop or your big, heavy 17-inch laptop, the HP Chromebook X2 11 is a fantastic device that just needs some fantastical price cuts to help it match the quality and value it holds.

But price is part of this equation, too, and as we were putting together this review, a big change happened that is very notable. HP decided to drop $200 off of the $599 price tag for the x2, and that matters a whole lot. At $599, you really have to decide if the aesthetic and tablet form factor are for you. At $399, that decision becomes far easier. While $400 isn’t secondary device money, it does put this tablet in the same realm as the Lenovo Duet that generally sells for $300 most days. I definitely think it is worth the upgrade. Also, keep in mind that this Chromebook will get regular security/OS updates until June of 2029, too. But I don’t know where you are in all this. I can’t tell you whether a tablet is right for you or if a Chromebook is better, but I can tell you 100% that this HP x2 11 is a fantastic overall piece of hardware that I think a lot of you could really enjoy. And, who knows, maybe if we eventually get some tablets with a bit more speed, I’ll get on board too.

This is a standard display format for tablet computers or small convertibles. You see more on the screen than on a smartphone but you can't use big resolutions well. On the other hand, mobility is not a problem.

80%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
