Striking fan-made concept renders of a BlackBerry Passport 2 smartphone have been shared online, and they include the always familiar physical QWERTY keyboard but also offer a couple of surprises. However, the design of the BlackBerry Passport 2 seems to be trapped in 2014 nostalgia rather than emulating 2021’s Android champions.

The world is still waiting for the BlackBerry 5G phone or even a BlackBerry Key3 device, so in the meantime Ts Designer, in conjunction with LetsGoDigital, has produced a fine concept video of a potential BlackBerry Passport 2. It’s hard not to be impressed by the highly stylized smartphone in the clip, which not only copies the classic design of the BlackBerry Passport but also springs some surprises.

The first surprise with the concept BlackBerry Passport 2 is its rear-facing dual-camera setup. The original Passport, which was released in 2014, had a single 13 MP main camera, so this is certainly an area where BlackBerry could play catch-up without betraying its business/enterprise leanings. This reveal is quickly followed by the BlackBerry Passport 2 showing its waterproof nature, allowing users to send those vital emails even in inclement weather.

Ts Designer shows off the concept BlackBerry Passport 2 in an attractive range of colors: There’s a serious silver-gray model, a flashy black and gold variant, and a simply stunning red and black version that would easily be a talking point if you whipped it out of your pocket. However, even though the concept designs here look terrific, it’s questionable if BlackBerry would pursue any such design language in a world of mostly curved-edge slim-line smartphones.

One possibility is that BlackBerry could select a design language that has already been suggested by concept renders for the Key3, which merge the best parts of a BlackBerry phone with the standout tall and straight-edged design of an Xperia 1 flagship smartphone. It all depends on what current license holder OnwardMobility has planned for one of the most famous names in smartphone history.
