Google Pixel 6 battery drain and overheating issues: Latest monthly update promises to resolve endurance woes
The Google Pixel 6 series of phones aren’t endurance champions, as we found out in our review of the Google Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro. Both smartphones have fairly large power packs, so the average to good battery life can likely be due to software. Apparently, runtimes and heat output have gotten even worse for many Pixel 6/6 Pro users after the Android 13 update. Per PhoneArena, the Google Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro suffer from a bug that causes the phones to randomly overheat and lose battery rapidly.
Google is now pushing out the September software update to Pixel phones running Android 13 that includes a fix for the battery drain issue. According to Google, the abnormal power drain was caused by “certain launcher background activities”. The update also aims to resolve an issue that prevented wireless charging from working in some conditions.
Additionally, the update also brings with it improved fingerprint scanning for the Pixel 6a, aiming to make the scanner more responsive and accurate. Similarly, the OTA also carries a fix for an issue that kept some Bluetooth devices from connecting to the phone. Finally, Google has also squashed a bug that caused some notifications to pop up truncated on the lock screen.
The September 2022 update for the Pixel phones is rolling out to the Pixel 4/XL, the Pixel 4a/4a(5G), the Pixel 5/5a, and the Pixel 6/6 Pro as we speak. Owners of the mid-range Pixel 6a will have to wait as Google will release the OTA for the phone later this month.
