The ROG Phone 9 and ROG Phone 9 Pro (read our review) launched with Android 15, and despite what competitors offer, Asus has promised just two OS upgrades for the flagship phones. Now, the first of the two OS upgrades has arrived, somewhat, has Asus has announced that its Android 16 Beta Program is now open. This announcement comes just a few days after the launch of the Android 16 beta program for the Zenfone 12 Ultra.
The Beta program is open to the ROG Phone 9 and the ROG Phone 9 Pro only. It doesn't include the ROG Phone 9 FE that launched in February and is also scheduled to receive only two OS upgrades. Nevertheless, Android 16 makes up one of two OS upgrades the ROG Phone 9 series (available on Amazon.de for €999) will receive with the other being Android 17 which should arrive next year.
Joining the Android 16 Beta program is simple, open the Settings app, select System and then select System update. Tap the gear icon at the top right corner and select ‘Enroll in Android preview program’. Click ‘Agree’ after reading the notice and privacy policy. Follow the rest of the instructions.
Do remember that this is beta software, so it is expected that there will be bugs that may or may not be severe. Asus has also revealed that there will be no option to rollback to a stable version of Android, so you will be stuck on the preview version until the stable version of Android 16 is released. Asus has also not said how long the beta program will run for.
