At only £290, though, the Asus VivoBook X200CA is tremendously cheap, and as a result it's easy to cut it some slack. Only battery life has suffered significantly, and while the display is disappointing, it's no worse than we've encountered on many other budget laptops. Compared with our current A-List runner-up, the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite, the VivoBook X200CA can hold its head up high – it delivers a decent all-round performance at half the price. It's by no means exciting, but as a basic, everyday laptop, the VivoBook X200CA packs more punch than any £300 laptop we've seen to date.

This is a decent laptop for the money, and, with 500GB of local storage, it’s a more flexible PC than the storage-constrained HP Stream 11. If you’re happy working in the cloud, however, the HP is the better choice.

The Asus X200MA is very cheap and its build quality is respectable for the cost. If you’re only looking for a laptop for the most basic of tasks, it’s a good choice for not much money, but the HP Chromebook 14 could be better suited if you don't need a Windows-based laptop.

Sadly, this is a case of Buy Cheap, Buy Twice. It’s simply just too slow, even for basic, everyday tasks. Chromebooks have come on in leaps and bounds in the last year: we’d pick a nippy Chrome OS number for the same price or a bit more over this sluggish Windows laptop any day, especially with Android apps on the way too. You get what you pay for, and in this case, you just don’t get enough gusto.

Just make sure that your expectations are adjusted accordingly and that you don't believe you're getting a laptop that can play the latest games. Intriguingly, the X200MA would make an interesting (and potentially more powerful) Chromebook with a lower outlay compared to its bigger brother, the C300MA.
