All in all, though, there’s a lot to like about these multimedia notebooks. While our living rooms were less crowded when we shipped them back to their makers, we do confess to being somewhat sorry to see them go. They certainly livened up our media consumption and made it easier for multiple family members to watch the movies of their choosing at the same time!

Traditionally, desktop-replacement laptops get little respect: They're often dissed as being overweight, unattractive, and pricey. Lucky for them, things are turning around. Thanks to the proliferation of high-definition screens and multiple hard drives, together with the decline in desktop computer sales, it's the perfect time for a comeback. The ASUS M70Sa-X2 is a fully loaded desktop replacement laptop (1 terabyte of storage!) that makes few compromises.

ASUS target market for the M70SA-X2 is towards the multimedia and gaming market segment. It does both of these fairly well, but could be better configured to do both. Instead, the system is better designed as a more general purpose performance system.

The Asus M70SA (£1391 inc. VAT) is a desktop replacement in the truest sense of the word. The body is made from thick and durable plastic that is finished in black and grey. The look is rather perfunctory, but the overall quality is above average. The one area where quality drops is the keyboard. It's a good size and there is even space for a numeric keypad, but we found there was a degree of rattle as we typed. This isn't a flaw, simply that we were expecting a little more attention to detail in this area. The design is impressive and while you won't want to take it on the move with you - it weighs 4.1kg - Asus has managed to fit plenty of features inside.

Priced at $2,399, the ASUS M70SA-C1 isn’t cheap. While it lacks the design flair of the Acer 8920G, it’s a stellar multimedia notebook that can act as an all-in-one entertainment hub. It’s not a gaming rig by any stretch, but the stunning display, Blu-ray drive, and absolutely insane storage capacity make it one of the best multifaceted machines around.

A full featured laptop with plenty of hard drive space, a striking full HD display married with a blu-ray drive and HDMI output, plus almost every connection you would need, it is truly an mobile entertainment / productivity machine – and if you get past some of the lackluster 3D performance, and technical service response (if needed) you have a really well rounded multimedia laptop, fully featured, and a nice price tag.

The Asus M70 is the most fully loaded laptop we've seen in a long while. Aside from its massive terabyte of hard-drive space (enough to hold a few hundred movies or a few hundred thousand MP3s), the multimedia system incorporates a Blu-ray drive and a full-HD display, plus an HDMI port, TV tuner, and five-speaker stereo sound. You can find Blu-ray-equipped desktop replacements for less, but no other media laptop currently offers as many features for the price as the Asus M70.

The Asus M70SA is a stunning machine and is currently our favourite desktop replacement. True, there are notebooks with better keyboards but for sheer power and usability this is as good as it currently gets.

Manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of design more than ever before at the moment, as Asus and countless others shrink laptops to unprecedented sizes and prices in the mini-laptop wars. However, it seems that the bulk Asus removes from one end of its range is ending up in the other, specifically in laptops like the 4kg-plus M70V. A monster of a Centrino 2 laptop: fast, surprisingly long-lasting and very well-equipped for the price

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
These cards should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings. Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings. Less demanding (and older) games, like Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, or Battlefield 2142 can be played with higher detail levels.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: The Hd 3650 is a middle class graphics card (in 2008) and compareable to an 8600M GT GPU from Nvidia. It is fabricated in 55nm process and due to Avivo video engine the graphic card can support the processor with several video operations (HD video too).
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS: Slower clocked 9600M GT and therefore a bit slower and cooler. In conjunction with an 9100M the 9600M GS is able to use HybridPower to save current.
NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT: The GeForce 9650M GT is a higher clocked 9600M GT but because of the die shrink from 65nm to 55nm the current consumption stays the same. The performance of the higher clocked chip should be up to 20% faster than the 9600M GT.
>> Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
17.1: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
4 kg:
This laptop is heavy below average, compared with the average of notebooks. Therefore especially desktop replacements fit in this class of weight.
4.4 kg:
80.8%: This rating is to be considered as average, because the amount of notebooks with better ratings is about equal like the amount with worse ratings.
