Archos 80 Titanium

The Archos 80 Titanium is a little bit of a conundrum. With a tough metal chassis, sleek, white, minimalist design and ARM Cortex A9 dual-core processor with a clock rate of 1.6GHz, the Archos 80 Titanium is well built, beautiful, and powerful. It is also pretty capable of running most 3D games. It sports a budget price, making it look like great value for money. This may seem like a winning device all around, but unfortunately everything else that lets the Archos 80 Titanium down. Everything else is mediocre at best. With a dismal internal storage capacity of 8 GB, a microSD card is mandatory. The microUSB port is only for file transfers and will not charge the device, only the DC plug will. The battery life is disappointing, lasting approximately 6 hours for light to moderate use.

The 1024x768 resolution of the 8 inch display provides decent, yet mid-range colors and contrast. The coating of the screen is visibly grainy, distorting images further. It runs Android version 4.1.1, which is behind the times. Most current devices run Android 4.2, which adds many more useful features, like multiple user account support. The Archos 80 Titanium is a stylish, yet ultimately unsatisfying device with many nagging problems. Its price may seem like its saving grace, but more powerful devices with less problems are available for just a little bit more.

Low-Budget Mini? The Archos 80 Titanium - another device from the Titanium series - recently became more widely available. With an 8-inch display and an aluminum chassis the Frenchman shows similarities to the iPad Mini. We have a closer look at the performance of the stylish device.

The Archos lacks the flair of more expensive rivals, then, but it does get the basics right: a good screen, decent build quality, enough power for browsing and gaming, and a largely untouched operating system. The poor battery life is disappointing, but if you hanker after a tablet with a larger screen, it’s worth considering.

The Archos 80 Titanium proves that you can get a decent tablet without breaking the bank. Its screen isn't high resolution, but it's a good IPS panel which matches the iPad mini for half as much. Performance is also good, as is build quality; only the cameras let the side down. If you're on a tight budget or want a tablet for your kids, this is a great choice.

Video: Archos 97b Titanium review - £200 9-inch Android tablet lacks performance
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
The Archos 97b Titanium looks like an iPad and contains a fairly recent and full version of Google Android - and it's cheap. Unfortunately that's where the good news ends. This tablet performs poorly, and the build quality doesn't stand up to close inspection.

50% Archos 97b Titanium review - Android tablet looks like an iPad, works... not so much
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
The Archos 97b Titanium has a high quality screen, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a microSD card slot. However, everything else in its repertoire goes against this iPad alternative. Poor performance and battery life make it all but unusable.

Archos: The French manufacturer Archos S.A. was founded in 1988. While they initially produced products such as MP3 players, they have started producing laptops, smartphones, and tablets in 2009.

The world market shares are small, but there are many reviews on Archos smartphones and tablets. While the ratings were below average in the early years, they have become better by 2016.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

ARM Mali-400 MP4: OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU for ARM based SoCs with 4 fragment processors and 1 vertex processor.

ARM Mali-400 MP: OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics card for ARM SoCs that is scaleable from one to four fragment processors and has got one vertex processor. Mainly used in conjunction with ARM A9 cores in tablets and smartphones.

5.00:

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.

8.00:

Large smartphones and a few small tablets are available for this display size. Unlike most smartphones, you can see more on the screen, more details and use larger resolutions. Such formats are better for people with defective vision. However, such devices are no longer easy to fit in a pocket, and they are probably not quite light either.

74.54%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
