Reviews for the Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 5.5 inch

80% Review: Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 (5.5in)
Source: PC Authority English Archive.org version
It’s hard not to like the Idol 3 – it gets so many things right for a phone that’s $379. Great screen, smooth performance and a relatively uncluttered Android interface. Compared to the competition in the same price range, nothing comes close except the Motorola Moto G. If you can live with a poor low light camera and few of Alcatel’s apps lingering around, the Idol 3 is a great alternative compared to some much more expensive smartphones.

The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 is one of the best smartphone deals yet. For just $250, you get a very bright display, superb speakers and an all-day battery in a sexy frame. The front and back cameras also performed well, though you'll definitely want to use the flash in low light. Among midrange unlocked phones, the Asus Zenfone 2 delivers faster performance for about $50 more, and the latest Moto G has a customizable design and better camera starting at just $180, but its performance is weaker than the Alcatel. Overall, the Onetouch Idol 3 is a great value.

Alcatel Idol 3: Holding its own with a pretty decent 5.5 inches
Source: Reg Hardware English Archive.org version
If you are in the market for a skinny phablet with a decent pair of speakers then the Idol 3 5.5" has a lot to recommend it. Light and compact and with an above-average display, it makes an excellent media player. A bit like a half-price HTC One M9. The only real drawbacks are the fixed battery – hardly an uncommon failing these days – and the rather questionable positioning of the power and volume buttons. I'm not sure the whole “100 per cent reversible” is such a big deal, but maybe I'm just missing the point.

I have been very impressed with the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 5.5″. I think the package that you get for the money spent is awesome, and if you are looking for a mid-tier handset at a fraction of the cost of some of the bigger more expensive players, then it is hard to over look this device. Competitors do include the Xperia M4 Aqua, but that has got a smaller screen and all importantly, much less in the way of usable memory which limits its real world use.

Motorola certainly opened a Pandora style box with the release of its Moto G smartphone. As a result other companies are now developing handsets that combine reasonable specifications with a price point that does not cause you to catch your breath or feel a pinch on your wallet. One such example of this trend is the Idol 3 from Alcatel OneTouch.

When is a flagship smartphone not a flagship? When the vendor is Alcatel – at the moment. The Idol 3 looks the part, and largely acts the part, but performance is more choppy than you’d expect in a top-of-the-range smartphone. Still, Alcatel’s phones are getting better, and the company seems to be progressively addressing our criticisms with each iteration. For just £200 SIM-free, the Onetouch Idol 3 is a phone you can be extremely happy with. However, we’re banking on the next version to be the handset that gets our solid, full-throated recommendation.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 (5.5) review – slim and elegant Full HD phablet at a reasonable price
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
Even now that we’re done testing Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 (5.5), we think the device is one of the better phablet models out there. The overheating due to heavy load is definitely a minus, but on the other hand, everything else seems fine. Especially as far as software is concerned, where in addition to some interesting options, we found dozens of pre-installed apps. We are impressed with the design as well. A thickness of only 7.4 mm and weight of 141 grams are values comparable to 5-inch smartphones. We can’t complain about the computational and graphics performance either – we enjoyed smooth gameplay. The camera met our expectations, providing relatively detailed photos with accurate colors and many settings.

If it wasn't for the issues we experienced when the phone is put under much greater strain, the 5.5in Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 would have scored higher. For the price, it manages to nail everything you'd want from an Android phone at this price.

Alcatel OneTouch has cut out all the nonsense, focusing on the bits that really matter to people. So we get good battery life, a top screen and cracking internal speakers, all for around half the price of one of this year’s real top-end phones. Sure, it might not earn you much cred among friends and isn’t as powerful as those phones. But do you want to be an Apple/Samsung sheep? The only big drawback are the performance issues, but in time it's possible that even those will disappear, making the Idol 3 an even more tempting alternative to the usual smartphone suspects.

The Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 has all the bells and whistles at a fraction the cost of major flagships. It's no flagship killer, but it's also not claiming to be. While good, good isn't always enough. Still, we're talking $250 (£270, about AU$328) unlocked. The fact the OneTouch Idol 3 even exists is pretty amazing. If you're willing to live with some imperfections for an excellent price, there's no reason this phone can't be good enough for you.

88% Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 Review: one of the best budget phones of the year
Source: Android Authority English Archive.org version
So, there you have it – a closer look at the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3! We might be looking at one of the best affordable devices this year. With plenty of mid-range to lower-end devices coming out all the time, it’s great to see Alcaltel remaining unique from the rest, without the need for any crazy features or gimmicks. A larger screen with dual front facing speakers, JBL enhancements, a solid camera, and a spartan operating system in an attractive body make this one of the easiest entry points to Android available yet, as well as one of the easiest on the wallet.

There are still clear benefits to buying a phone for $600 or more. You’ll get better design, better performance, and a much better camera. But Alcatel has done a fine job of narrowing the gap, so spending considerably less is no longer a dubious proposition.

80% Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 review: the budget flagship to rule them all
Source: Pocketnow English Archive.org version
If you just hit the pricing section and had to do a double-take after reading the rest of the review, I don’t blame you. Alcatel OneTouch has done a tremendous job with the Idol 3, and it’s set a new standard for all budget smartphones to measure up to. From its powerful specifications to the loud stereo speakers and the large, vibrant display, this phone is every bit as good as devices sitting at twice the cost or even more — just as long as you can deal with the subpar camera. The Idol 3 is the Alcatel OneTouch’s best effort yet, and more than that, it’s the best value for a smartphone that we’ve ever seen.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 Review: Surprisingly Good
Source: Slashgear English Archive.org version
Alcatel has created a really, really great phone in the OneTouch Idol 3. I'll use the word "surprise" once again to express how I've felt reviewing this device. I did not expect to be so stoked about it, but I really am - it's a winner. You can purchase the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 at a variety of retailers immediately if not soon for around $250 off-contract.

At a time when many phone makers find themselves changing their flagship phones for change’s sake to help justify keeping their high price points, there continues to be a need for phones like the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3. Instead of building another device for tomorrow, Alcatel realizes that it’s 2015, and that there’s too much capable smartphone tech for it to be unavailable to wide swaths of people today.

Comment

Model: Many people often wonder what became of the successful 90s phone producer Alcatel as users have heard very little of them after the early 2000s. Now however, Alcatel seems to be making a comeback and the One Touch Idol 3 has been hailed as a very affordable mid-range phone that looks good and functions with a solid performance. The phone feature a 5.5” LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 401 ppi. The resolution is pretty standard for a phone this size which is only 0.3 inches or 7.4 mm thick, and weighs a mere 142 grams. The design is elegant and stylishly slim with rounded edges and a grayish brushed color with chrome highlights.

There is a 13 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front facing camera. Although good for daylight and natural light photography, the cameras tend to have trouble focusing in low light settings. The hardware here includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5 GHz Cortex A-53 quad core processor, an Adreno 405 GPU and 2 GB RAM. Users can choose whether they want 16 GB or 32 GB internal storage which can be expanded by up to 128 GB. It comes with an Android Lollipop OS but some have said that the customized user interface can be a bit confusing, since it is Alcatel's own design. Apart from that, it should strike users a very economical but practical option.

Qualcomm Adreno 405: Integrated graphics card for ARM based SoCs. Depending on the used SoC the clock rate is around 500 MHz and features 48 unified shaders.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

615 MSM8939:

Mid-range ARM SoC with 8 CPU cores (Cortex-A53, 64-bit capable) and an Adreno 405 GPU. Manufactured in a 28 nm LP process.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

5.50":

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.

Alcatel:

Alcatel is a French telecommunications company originally founded in 1898. The company specializes in the design and manufacture of cell phones, fixed-line phones, networking and communications solutions, and other telecommunications products. Alcatel is headquartered in Paris, France, and operates worldwide.

The telecommunications equipment manufacturer merged in 2006 to form Alcatel-Lucent. Various business units were sold to other companies, so the Alcatel brand name is used by different companies nowadays. The brand names "Alcatel One Touch" and "Alcatel Idol" are used by the Chinese company TCL for smartphones and tablets.

80.12%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
