The One Touch Idol Ultra had all the makings of a very good handset, but the minor issues and niggles stop it from achieving its goal. Apart from the good looks and build quality, there’s nothing else that really stands out. The display produces good colours, but the sensitivity of the screen should have been better. This issue creeps up when using the phone or even typing. The lack of a standard headphone jack is also a deal breaker. Finally, given the price, we expect GLONASS, the ability to do 1080p and a scratch resistant glass as standard. The handset could have used a more powerful dual-core chipset, if not a quad-core.

The Alcatel One Touch Idol delivers a lightweight design and good audio quality for an unsubsidized phone at this price. We also appreciate the multiple fun color options. And while the 1-GHz dual-core MT6577 processor isn't the most powerful, the fact that this handset doesn't use a heavily skinned version of Android makes it feel snappier than some competing smartphones.

The Alcatel One Touch Idol S is a seriously impressive phone for the price. It's a shame there's not more storage space, but its excellent battery life and smart design make it a joy to use. It's very hard to choose between this handset and the Moto G. The G is very slightly faster and has 8GB of internal storage, but there's no microSD card slot, while the Idol S has stingy internal memory but expandable storage, and is available on a £19-per-month 4G contract from EE. The One Touch Idol S's slimline proportions and 4G connectivity just push the G into second place, though - it's our new budget champion and a Best Buy.

Alcatel One Touch Idol X+

The Alcatel One Touch Idol X+ was released in the second quarter of 2014 and it featured an Android OS, v4.2.1 (Jelly Bean), which could be upgraded to the latest KitKat v4.4.4. The smartphone is powered by an 2 GHz Cortex A7 octa core processor and a GPU chip that handles the display needs of the phone. This phone has an option of 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage while purchasing. The 5" edge to edge touch screen display is capable of a high resolution (1080p). The phone is thin and light at a mere 8.1 mm and 130g, which is suitable for one-handed use. The metal trim around the body gives it a luxurious look while the back cover is a polycarbonate. There is a 13.1 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and a secondary 2 MP camera capable of recording at 1080p@30fps. The Idol X+ comes with a pair of JBL stereo headsets, which promises enhanced audio quality named Hi-Fi. There are two color options available, which is black and white. The 2500 mAh Lithium battery promises up to 27 hours of talk time on 2G and standby up to 440 hours on 2G. Lastly, the downside of this smartphone is that it does not support the LTE or 4G network.

The Alcatel OneTouch Idol X+ is one of the best dual-SIM phones we've reviewed and a good choice for the price. It has a nice design and good features like a Full HD display and 13 Mp camera but bear in mind that the Moto G 2014 and ZTE Blade S6 are both cheaper and dual-SIM. However, in the wider smartphone market there is tough competition and its lack of a microSD card slot and other hardware such as 4G LTE support mean it's outpaced by the Honor 6.

The Alcatel Idol X+ wants to be a premium phone but at a price that everyone can afford. And while some aspects hit the mark - the screen is okay, performance not bad and the battery life acceptable - elsewhere it fails to convince, with cheap-feeling design and software, a sub-par camera and no microSD expansion. While the price is tempting, if you’re after a good-quality budget Android smartphone, we’d advise you save your cash and opt for a Moto G2 instead.

The Alcatel OneTouch Idol Mini does a good job of disguising its budget asking price by delivering a slim, good-looking smartphone package. It's the look that's among the phone's strongest traits. In that respect the Idol Mini ticks a box and for £80 it's hard to complain. But the sheer strength of the Moto E and the EE Kestrel's 4G connectivity see the Idol Mini fall a step behind where it could be, with all eyes falling on its follow-up due in the coming months.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol Alpha

A stylish little package with attention to details; the Alcatel OneTouch Idol Alpha is an eye catching phone with capable hardware specifications. The unique design of the device is very refreshing with beautiful corner curves and a full metal construction. The experience of using the Idol Alpha definitely doesn't live up to the early promise. Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 5.5 inch

Many people often wonder what became of the successful 90s phone producer Alcatel as users have heard very little of them after the early 2000s. Now however, Alcatel seems to be making a comeback and the One Touch Idol 3 has been hailed as a very affordable mid-range phone that looks good and functions with a solid performance. The phone feature a 5.5” LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 401 ppi. The resolution is pretty standard for a phone this size which is only 0.3 inches or 7.4 mm thick, and weighs a mere 142 grams. The design is elegant and stylishly slim with rounded edges and a grayish brushed color with chrome highlights. There is a 13 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front facing camera. Although good for daylight and natural light photography, the cameras tend to have trouble focusing in low light settings. The hardware here includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5 GHz Cortex A-53 quad core processor, an Adreno 405 GPU and 2 GB RAM. Users can choose whether they want 16 GB or 32 GB internal storage which can be expanded by up to 128 GB. It comes with an Android Lollipop OS but some have said that the customized user interface can be a bit confusing, since it is Alcatel's own design. Apart from that, it should strike users a very economical but practical option.

It’s hard not to like the Idol 3 – it gets so many things right for a phone that’s $379. Great screen, smooth performance and a relatively uncluttered Android interface. Compared to the competition in the same price range, nothing comes close except the Motorola Moto G. If you can live with a poor low light camera and few of Alcatel’s apps lingering around, the Idol 3 is a great alternative compared to some much more expensive smartphones.

The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 is one of the best smartphone deals yet. For just $250, you get a very bright display, superb speakers and an all-day battery in a sexy frame. The front and back cameras also performed well, though you'll definitely want to use the flash in low light. Among midrange unlocked phones, the Asus Zenfone 2 delivers faster performance for about $50 more, and the latest Moto G has a customizable design and better camera starting at just $180, but its performance is weaker than the Alcatel. Overall, the Onetouch Idol 3 is a great value.

Alcatel Idol 3: Holding its own with a pretty decent 5.5 inches
Source: Reg Hardware English Archive.org version
If you are in the market for a skinny phablet with a decent pair of speakers then the Idol 3 5.5" has a lot to recommend it. Light and compact and with an above-average display, it makes an excellent media player. A bit like a half-price HTC One M9. The only real drawbacks are the fixed battery – hardly an uncommon failing these days – and the rather questionable positioning of the power and volume buttons. I'm not sure the whole “100 per cent reversible” is such a big deal, but maybe I'm just missing the point.

I have been very impressed with the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 5.5″. I think the package that you get for the money spent is awesome, and if you are looking for a mid-tier handset at a fraction of the cost of some of the bigger more expensive players, then it is hard to over look this device. Competitors do include the Xperia M4 Aqua, but that has got a smaller screen and all importantly, much less in the way of usable memory which limits its real world use.

Motorola certainly opened a Pandora style box with the release of its Moto G smartphone. As a result other companies are now developing handsets that combine reasonable specifications with a price point that does not cause you to catch your breath or feel a pinch on your wallet. One such example of this trend is the Idol 3 from Alcatel OneTouch.

When is a flagship smartphone not a flagship? When the vendor is Alcatel – at the moment. The Idol 3 looks the part, and largely acts the part, but performance is more choppy than you’d expect in a top-of-the-range smartphone. Still, Alcatel’s phones are getting better, and the company seems to be progressively addressing our criticisms with each iteration. For just £200 SIM-free, the Onetouch Idol 3 is a phone you can be extremely happy with. However, we’re banking on the next version to be the handset that gets our solid, full-throated recommendation.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 (5.5) review – slim and elegant Full HD phablet at a reasonable price
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
Even now that we’re done testing Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 (5.5), we think the device is one of the better phablet models out there. The overheating due to heavy load is definitely a minus, but on the other hand, everything else seems fine. Especially as far as software is concerned, where in addition to some interesting options, we found dozens of pre-installed apps. We are impressed with the design as well. A thickness of only 7.4 mm and weight of 141 grams are values comparable to 5-inch smartphones. We can’t complain about the computational and graphics performance either – we enjoyed smooth gameplay. The camera met our expectations, providing relatively detailed photos with accurate colors and many settings.

Alcatel OneTouch has cut out all the nonsense, focusing on the bits that really matter to people. So we get good battery life, a top screen and cracking internal speakers, all for around half the price of one of this year’s real top-end phones. Sure, it might not earn you much cred among friends and isn’t as powerful as those phones. But do you want to be an Apple/Samsung sheep? The only big drawback are the performance issues, but in time it's possible that even those will disappear, making the Idol 3 an even more tempting alternative to the usual smartphone suspects.

So, there you have it – a closer look at the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3! We might be looking at one of the best affordable devices this year. With plenty of mid-range to lower-end devices coming out all the time, it’s great to see Alcaltel remaining unique from the rest, without the need for any crazy features or gimmicks. A larger screen with dual front facing speakers, JBL enhancements, a solid camera, and a spartan operating system in an attractive body make this one of the easiest entry points to Android available yet, as well as one of the easiest on the wallet.

There are still clear benefits to buying a phone for $600 or more. You’ll get better design, better performance, and a much better camera. But Alcatel has done a fine job of narrowing the gap, so spending considerably less is no longer a dubious proposition.

80% Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 review: the budget flagship to rule them all
Source: Pocketnow English Archive.org version
If you just hit the pricing section and had to do a double-take after reading the rest of the review, I don’t blame you. Alcatel OneTouch has done a tremendous job with the Idol 3, and it’s set a new standard for all budget smartphones to measure up to. From its powerful specifications to the loud stereo speakers and the large, vibrant display, this phone is every bit as good as devices sitting at twice the cost or even more — just as long as you can deal with the subpar camera. The Idol 3 is the Alcatel OneTouch’s best effort yet, and more than that, it’s the best value for a smartphone that we’ve ever seen.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 Review: Surprisingly Good
Source: Slashgear English Archive.org version
Alcatel has created a really, really great phone in the OneTouch Idol 3. I'll use the word "surprise" once again to express how I've felt reviewing this device. I did not expect to be so stoked about it, but I really am - it's a winner. You can purchase the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 at a variety of retailers immediately if not soon for around $250 off-contract.

At a time when many phone makers find themselves changing their flagship phones for change’s sake to help justify keeping their high price points, there continues to be a need for phones like the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3. Instead of building another device for tomorrow, Alcatel realizes that it’s 2015, and that there’s too much capable smartphone tech for it to be unavailable to wide swaths of people today.

You'd never know at a glance that the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 4.7 costs just $180. The handsome, solid device offers a bright display, loud speakers and capable cameras that will please multimedia gluttons. Too bad the phone doesn't last long on a charge. Some may also prefer a more stock Android experience compared to Alcatel's cutesy skin.

The Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7 is a $180 phone that looks and handles like a $350 phone. Under any other circumstances, I'd give it my wholehearted recommendation. The problem is that the same-price Moto G offers a customizable design via MotoMaker, IPX7 water resistance, better battery life, and a mostly stock Android experience. There are also custom features like Moto Display, which lets you interact with notifications when your screen is off, and Moto Assist, which can recognize when you're asleep or in a meeting and alter notifications accordingly. Then there's also the promise of reliable Android updates.

Of all the sub-1K AED smartphones that I have seen, the Idol 3 is simply the best mid-range Android smartphones I’ve used till date. A near stock Android smartphone with dual front speakers and good battery life is something usually found in the higher end segment, with Dual-SIM functionality also as an added bonus. To think that this device is just a mere 899 AED is a great steal.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7 review
Source: Stuff TV English Archive.org version
The Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7 is a phone that scores tremendously well on the tilt factor. It’s not super-powered, doesn’t have the highest-spec screen in the world and doesn’t offer features we haven’t seen before, bar the incredibly loud speaker. On paper, it may not blow you away, especially when 720p phones can be had for around the £100 mark these days. However, just about every aspect of the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7 is a cut above those models. The storage, the screen, the speakers and the software are all pretty great.

There's no doubting the hardware capability of the Idol 4S - we've seen it at work several times on Android. Idol 4S Smartphone Review: Unlocking The Power Of Windows 10
Source: Forbes English Archive.org version
As personal data moves towards the cloud, Microsoft is in a much better position to capitalise than it was with the older Windows Phone approach to mobile. The Idol 4S is not the only way to use Microsoft's cloud on a mobile device (thanks to iOS and Android apps from Redmond) but it is the one that has the tightest integration. There's a familiarity if you use Windows 10 on the desktop, and if you are committed to Microsoft's cloud then the synergy between cloud, desk, and mobile will outweigh the ecosystem issues.

For $470, the Alcatel Idol 4S is the best Windows phone you can buy, offering T-Mobile users a sleek build, powerful hardware, VR capabilities, and extensive productivity features. The Alcatel IDOL 4S is a gorgeous device. It’s thin, shiny, and fast. It’s the first to add mobile virtual reality support to the platform too! Unfortunately, at least at this time, it feels like Microsoft is really holding Alcatel back with their poorly made Universal Windows Platform apps on Windows 10 Mobile. If they can get their act together and make their own universal apps work properly on their own platforms while at the same time adding a compelling Windows Holographic/VR shell to Windows 10 Mobile… then we could have something really special in the Alcatel IDOL 4S. Windows fans and budding holographic/VR developers would jump on a device like this since it’s so much more inexpensive than the high-end HoloLens.

Alcatel Idol 4S review: A flagship phone in mid-range clothes

I think Alcatel really missed the mark with the Idol 4S. There were a few button placement complaints, which are very minor. It had a lot going for it — the screen, the snappiness and even the software. As unfortunate as it is, the camera is really what makes or breaks a phone. If you don’t have a good camera, no one is going to buy it. And that’s where I feel Alcatel has really missed the mark. If it did have a good camera, Alcatel could have had a high-end device that could easily compete with the likes of the Galaxy S7, even without the flagship level specs on paper.

The Idol 4s faces stiff competition at the £400 price point from the likes of the Sony Xperia X, OnePlus 3 and Samsung Galaxy A5, but it’s definitely got plenty of appeal thanks to a solid pair of cameras, decent battery life and a gorgeous Quad HD screen - something most rivals can’t boast.

The IDOL 4S is a worthy successor to the 2015 IDOL 3 and improves upon it in almost every way. However, the 4S still struggles with camera performance and intense games can have some occasional stuttering while playing. At $399 dollars, the IDOL 4S is a great phone, but it is also up against some great competition.

Alcatel IDOL 4S [Review]
Source: G Style Magazine English Archive.org version
I like where Alcatel has come from and how they have tried to fit into the affordable mid-tier market. The IDOL 4S gives you just about everything you could want in a smartphone from a bright vibrant display to dual facing speakers to throwing in a VR headset. It does have some competition in its price range and I think it being around the $350 mark would do it more justice.

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a well-built phone that offers reasonable performance and solid battery life. However, with pricing starting at $400 (£300) it’s a little overpriced. The OnePlus 3 is only £30 more and comes with better components. I’m also not sold on the VR headset that comes bundled with it. The headset is too basic and feels like a gimmicky addition. I’d have preferred it if Alcatel dropped the VR headset and reduced the phone’s price.

This is a tough one. Alcatel put out a device that’s reasonably fast, has a strong battery, and offers a fun VR experience out of the box. Had this device been released a year ago at this price point, it would be a no brainer, and I would say the Idol 4S is a device worth spending $400 on. But it wasn't, and in the last year, there have been some truly excellent phones released around this price.

Review: Alcatel Idol 4S
Source: Ausdroid English Archive.org version
The Alcatel Idol 4S is a mid-range phone with a premium design and build. The specs of the phone are mid-range only but the attractiveness and wow factor it holds when in the hand mean it could easily pass for a premium device. The usability is great thanks to minimal interference by Alcatel in the experience and the performance is above par for a mid-range phone. The battery life is average for a mid-range device. Lower specs always drain the battery less than high end specs and thus I could easily get a full day out of this phone with heavy use. The camera is good but not great and Alcatel have done a good job customising the app.

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a 5.5-inch mid-ranger from a company that's spent the time to refine its design and hardware. You get access to a fantastic camera with manual features and Hi-Fi audio. This is a fantastic product. From form-factor to display to camera and battery life, I cannot fault it. But for the processor- ever so slightly under-powered when you use it alongside the VR headset and while gaming. It has all the chutzpah to take on the mighty OnePlus 3, the current king of the mid-price range and apart from the processor matches it blow for blow.

We haven't touched on the Idol 4S's VR viewer so far, and maybe there's a good reason for that. Like a few other aspects of this phone, it feels like an afterthought; as if rather than designing a mid-ranger from the ground up to offer a great VR experience, some marketing team took notice of the phone's quad HD screen and thought, “let's ship it in a VR headset and bundle a bunch of VR software.”

If the Alcatel Idol 4S was judged against mid-range devices from HTC, Samsung LG and Sony, it would stand head and shoulders above the competition. The problem is that we have flagship-level devices from Xiaomi, OnePlus and ZTE which are also selling for $400. While most of these devices have a compromise or two, they all feature much faster processors and RAM.

So there you have it, our in-depth review of the Alcatel Idol 4S and it’s clear that Alcatel has certainly made some huge strides since the Idol 3. In a bid to create an excellent smartphone that is still affordable, Alcatel did have to cut a few corners but this is to be expected and for the most part, it doesn’t quite detract away from the experience.

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a sleek Android phone with a beautiful display and lots of useful accessories for the price. At $400, it's a relatively affordable way to get into VR, especially compared with buying a Gear VR and a pricey Samsung phone to go with it. But you will be making some compromises. You can't push the phone as hard as the OnePlus 3 when it comes to high-end gaming, and it doesn't have the same camera performance and minimally altered UI you get with a OnePlus phone.

Source: Tom's Guide English Archive.org version
Good battery life, booming speakers and a lush screen — all in an attractive design — alone would make the $399 Alcatel Idol 4S a strong unlocked phone deal. But on top of that, you get a VR headset bundled with the phone. Although Alcatel's included VR headset isn't as good as the Samsung Gear VR, it's still a nice add-on that makes this phone an even better value. Plus, it comes with a phone case and a screen protector. The OnePlus 3, also $399, offers better performance, but it has a lower-resolution display and doesn't last as long on a charge. When you put it all together, Alcatel's Idol 4S is a worthy option and one of the best unlocked phones on the market.

That screen is gorgeous, the speakers are so insanely loud you don’t need Bluetooth to get the party started, and even though it doesn’t have the fastest CPU around, it still makes Android feel snappy. VR is a nice little bonus, even if it can’t quite keep the frame rates high enough for the latest games. We’re not ready to call it a sleeper hit just yet, but don’t be surprised if it ends up shifting huge numbers - and not just in Alcatel’s native France. Maybe this time next year we'll be proclaiming its successor the heir to the OnePlus 3's throne...

Alcatel Idol 4 Review: Mid-range standout
Source: Mobile Syrup English Archive.org version
The Idol 4 is a $300 phone outright, making it cheaper than others in this category. The two lingering issues are longevity from battery life and Android updates. Motorola’s G4 Plus is available now for $350-$400, depending on the vendor, and is being sold unlocked at Costco now for $349.99. The DTEK50 is available unlocked from BlackBerry directly for $429.99.

Alcatel:

Alcatel is a French telecommunications company originally founded in 1898. The company specializes in the design and manufacture of cell phones, fixed-line phones, networking and communications solutions, and other telecommunications products. The telecommunications equipment manufacturer merged in 2006 to form Alcatel-Lucent. Various business units were sold to other companies, so the Alcatel brand name is used by different companies nowadays. The brand names "Alcatel One Touch" and "Alcatel Idol" are used by the Chinese company TCL for smartphones and tablets.
