Newly developed design. The Alcatel 5 is supposed to attract customers as the new design flagship of the Chinese company TCL. In order to do that, it throws out the established design arrangements and reorders them. The result is a smartphone that pursues other solutions but is weak in the detail. We clarify in our review what buyers of the Alcatel 5 can expect.

Touted as their “flagship” device, the Alcatel 5 sells for Php 8,499. While we admittedly love its unconventional notch-free design, its outdated processor and Android OS make us think twice about this promising device. Other brands offer better specs at a similar price or lower, placing the Alcatel 5 at a really tough place.

This is not a premium phone and so one cannot expect premium performance. However, having 32GB ROM and 3GB RAM and running Android 7 (but not the more recent Android 8) on an octa-core MTK6750 processor one can expect and does get reasonable performance all round even though booting up from cold took the long time of about 90 seconds. Available SIM-free on Amazon for £179.99 it should suit those who want the wide range of features but are not power users who make heavy use of a smartphone.

The Alcatel 5 offers a dominating 18:9 display and reasonable camera performance for around £230. However, a slightly odd design, underwhelming performance and mediocre software make it hard to recommend in a strong field. The similarly priced Moto G5S Plus does the basics a lot better and with considerably more style.

The Alcatel 5 is definitely an engaging smartphone. From our short experience with it, it appears that you get a lot - like real lot - for your money. We are not too fussed about the low storage space or average processor, or even top bezel as for the price you get a very good looking phone with some nice premium features.

With an almost bezel-free display, this 18:9 ratio phone does similar tricks as a lot of the big flagship devices, but for less. If everything here works well, the Alcatel 5 could be a great handset.

At €229 it's unlikely you'll spot a phone that's more eye-catching than the Alcatel 5 when it launches. Its unconventional approach to screen bezel will make it one of the few phones that's recognisable in the sea of same-y looking devices.

Alcatel 5V
The Alcatel 5V is a budget smartphone which highlights the display and camera. Its 6.2” HD+ FullView 19:9 display claims to lets users enjoy media to the max, while its design stuns and its pro AI dual camera provides effortless photos. The Alcatel 5V is differentiated from the mass with the design, characterized by a curved and compact body, 2.5D glass and a glossy finish that will certainly not go unnoticed. The Alcatel 5V smartphone features a 6.2-inch notched HD+ display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and is protected by an Asahi Dragontrail glass. Dragontrail, manufactured by Asahi Glass Co., is an alkali-aluminosilicate sheet glass engineered for a combination of thinness, lightness and damage-resistance, similar to Corning's Gorilla Glass. The display has a screen resolution of 720 x 1,500 pixels and a pixel density of 268 ppi, which will give a clear viewing experience. The smartphone sports a dual rear set-up of 12MP + 2MP sensors that features HDR mode and burst mode. Additional features of the camera include phase detection autofocus and Dual-color LED flash. At the front, there is an 8MP snapper with an aperture of F2.8, which is likely to capture bright and clears selfies. Users can use the sensors to achieve the blurry bokeh effect, then edit the subject of the photo with the refocusing tool and make some final adjustments to make the photos the best.
As for performance, it runs on a MediaTek Helio P22 chipset with a 2.0 GHz octa-core CPU, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in storage. It is aided by a PowerVR GE8320 GPU to handle the graphic performance of the device. Aside from that, the storage can be expanded up to 128 GB via a microSD card. There is Face Recognition technology, a fingerprint sensor and 4G LTE connectivity, too. The smartphone has been induced by a massive battery capacity of 4000 mAh provided by a Li-ion battery. On the connectivity side, it has only one SIM slot, which supports 4G. Other connecting sides include Wi-Fi 802.11, Mobile Hotspot v4.0, A-GPS for tracking the location of the user. The absence of a dual-SIM slot may disappoint some users. In conclusion, the Alcatel 5V is a good device in its price range. It is equipped with adequate battery capacity, which will meet most of the user’s expectations for power supply. It is not a powerful device, but nevertheless adequate for basic tasks and some light entertainment. It is a good budget device for teenagers, the elderly or as a secondary smartphone. However, there is some serious competition for this phone out there. The Redmi 7 or even the Samsung A20 is a good choice in the same range.

While the Alcatel 5V has the specs and features of a potentially great budget mid-range phone for 2019, the phone is plagued with software optimization issues and a half-baked, hard to use UI.

After releasing several smartphones during MWC 2018, Alcatel launched the 5V last June 2018 to strengthen its revamped portfolio. Thanks to its mid-year announcement date, the 5V looks quite different from its brothers launched earlier in the year, sporting a glossy rear panel, dual rear cameras, and a notched display.

Alcatel is a French telecommunications company originally founded in 1898. The company specializes in the design and manufacture of cell phones, fixed-line phones, networking and communications solutions, and other telecommunications products. 67.85%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
