Notebook shoppers, start your engines. The latest Acer Ferrari laptop is a good choice if you're looking for something a little different--but not too offbeat--in a home portable. The $2399 (as of 2/6/07) Ferrari 5005WLMi offers better design and battery life than earlier Acer Ferrari models did, and it has some new features and an unusual keyboard. Acer is the official supplier to the Scuderia Ferrari Formula One racing team, and the 5005WLMi has the candy-apple-red trim of older Ferrari laptops but a comparatively sedate black lid instead of a checkered one.

A sports car is a blast, but on a long drive its tight confines and sacrifices in creature comforts make a sporty luxury car more alluring. The same line of thinking is behind the $2,399 Acer Ferrari 5005WLMi (a Windows Vista Ultimate version is available for $2,699). It delivers the sharp looks of the ultraportable Acer Ferrari 1000 but in a scaled-up package that's more comfortable to use in the home, office, or dorm. With its glossy carbon-fiber-patterned lid, red accents, and yellow prancing-horse logo, the 5005WLMi stands out from the field of gray and silver notebooks, without being as outlandish as the Alienware Aurora or Asus Lamborghini models.

No bones about it: The Acer Ferrari 5000 is one sweet-looking laptop. Its sleek black case with Ferrari-red accents prominently features the sports car maker's logo on both the lid and the keyboard deck. Add in its thorough feature set and strong application performance, and you would have a winning machine--but for the price. At $2,399, the Acer Ferrari 5000 costs quite a bit more than competitive systems; an identically configured HP Pavilion dv6000z costs just $1,498, and a closely configured Dell Inspiron E1505 costs $1,835. Unless you're buying the Ferrari 5000 to match your actual Ferrari sports car, it's tough to justify the extra expense.

Well, who can't afford a Ferrari sports car at least buy a laptop. Oh, wait...the Ferrari laptop? This is as affordable as the sports car. No doubt that the Acer Ferrari 5005WLMi latop had a great performance and as its automobile counterpart it is fast, the price for this laptop is high. See, Acer thought well when naming its laptop Ferrari: it looks good (just like the car), it is fast (just like the car), and it is expensive (just like the car). I wonder: is it a V8 or a V12?

However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.3 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
71.75%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
