Acer is known for producing good-value laptops that are brimming with features. Packing an Intel Core i5 processor and Blu-ray drive, the 15.6-inch Aspire 5942G certainly delivers on the feature front, but it isn't exactly cheap. The Acer Aspire 5942G's appearance and screen are so-so, but the configuration that we reviewed goes a long way towards making up for these failings with its impressive specification and swift performance.

There are many things that the Acer Aspire 5942G isn't: it isn't the prettiest notebook out there, nor does it have the best screen; it isn't the cheapest Blu-ray equipped notebook your money can buy either. However, in fitting with what Acer have done many times in the past, the 5942G brings together an impressive spec of components at a price that is hard to beat

A feature-packed media centre and one of the most powerful laptops around. By packing impressive power and features into a comparatively portable chassis, the Aspire 5942G-524G64Bn is a fantastic home media centre. While it is not the most affordable Blu-ray machine on the market, it is certainly one of the most powerful and very difficult to fault.

Blu-ray is far from a ubiquitous feature on laptops, but even Toshiba has finally realised that any 'multimedia' laptop should have it as standard. Aside from the merely average display, the Acer Aspire 5942G offers the performance and features of a laptop that could cost a lot more. If you're after a high-performance Blu-ray laptop and aren't too concerned about having a top-notch screen to go with it, it's a great value option.

One product that falls into the desktop replacement category is the Acer Aspire 5942G laptop. With dimensions of 382 x 174 x 26mm (W x D x H) in its closed state and weighing 3.0kg (including the 6-cell battery pack), this reflective black encased model cries out for a permanent home on your desk space with, perhaps, an option for occasional travel privileges.

It’s chunky and covered in go-faster stickers to attract Dixons grazers, but at heart the Acer 5942G is a powerhouse of a laptop, and well suited to modern gaming and sundry entertainment purposes. Construction is heavy but solid, and there’s enough connectivity to cover almost every need. It’s pricier than the ATI HD 5650-wielding Mesh Edge DX, but is a better made and ultimately better specified laptop that's unmatched at the price

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850:
The HD 5850 is a slower clocked HD 5870 and is reliant on fast GDDR5 memory to perform in the high-end segment. It is based on the Desktop HD 5770 chip but with a lower clock speed.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
620M:
The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.
740QM:
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
Intel Core i5:
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.8 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.1 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
83.33%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
