All together, the Acer Aspire 5740 turns in sufficient scores and performance for a midrange audience. It easily multitasks across general Office, email, and web applications. And it matches the lightweight needs of its target audience. But it never pleasantly surprises or supplies compelling extras. Its video, audio, and battery performance are only adequate for a forgiving audience.

The Acer Aspire 5740-6378 parks itself next to most midrange laptops. It feels fast enough for all common productivity applications; carries a big, 15.6-inch screen; and has nearly all the inputs and outputs you could want. But it never reaches beyond that middle ground. Mid-range buyers will be satisfied, but mediocre audio and video performance never aspire beyond that crowd.

The Acer Aspire 5740-6378 possesses a responsive island-style keyboard, robust speakers, and great performance for a surprisingly low price. Gamers on a budget should opt for the premium 5740G-6395 configuration, which features discrete ATI graphics for just $100 more. While the design of this notebook doesn’t thrill, multimedia mavens looking for an affordable mainstream system are wise to consider the 5740.

Intel spent a lot of marketing dollars touting its new Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs during the Super Bowl, and if the Core i5-powered Acer Aspire 5740-6378 is any indication, Intel’s boasts were warranted. In terms of all-around performance with everyday productivity apps, the Aspire 5750 is the speediest under-$1,000 mainstream notebook we’ve tested yet, and its scores match or beat those of machines that cost hundreds more. With impressive Core i5 performance, a roomy screen and keyboard, and plenty of features for the price, this Aspire may be the best $750 notebook yet.

Moore's Law predicts that transistor density, and thus processor speeds, increase dramatically over time, but even I was stunned to discover this $650 Acer laptop performs as well as a $2,000 gaming laptop (like the Sager NP8662) from 6 months ago. The Acer Aspire AS5740-6378 is an ideal desktop replacement laptop for performance enthusiasts and penny-pinchers, but gives up on looks and battery life.

This 15.6-inch notebook provides powerful graphics, zippy Core i5 performance, and strong audio for less than the competition. Gamers on a budget would do well to consider the $749 Acer Aspire 5740G-6979. While the design of this notebook doesn’t thrill, multimedia aficionados and impoverished fraggers looking for an affordable mainstream system with powerful graphics can’t do much better than this.

Acer's Aspire AS5740-5513 is a solid value for those looking for a good performing budget laptop that won't require 3D graphics. The Core i3 processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory allow it to tackle applications previous generations of budget systems could only dream of. Many of the other features are pretty standard for the price but the system does trail a bit in battery life and has too many trialware applications.

The Acer Aspire 5740-333G32Mn delivers excellent overall performance and superior 3D graphics speed. Some useful extra control buttons and a DVD burner combine with a good sound system to make a laptop great for multimedia and entertainment use. It’s rather heavy and bulky to carry around everyday although over four hours battery life is impressive considering its powerful components.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)

Intel Core i5:
430M:
The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i3:
330M:
The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

2.8 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.1 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
77.58%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
